Best Poker on TV?

10 May 2005

Let me start by saying there is a ton of good poker on TV today, and some "not so good" poker on TV as well. However, I find myself enjoying the Heads Up Championship more than any other poker event on television.

The set was absolutely perfect and the production quality has class written all over it. Don't get me wrong I love both ESPN's coverage of the WSOP and the Travel Channel's coverage of the WPT, but the format and set up for the NBC show is the best I've seen yet which really bodes well for the future.

Now we all just have to keep our fingers crossed and hope that the ratings are there so that NBC will continue to show poker on TV. Watching James Woods play Johnny Chan? That was awesome. Or how about Paul Phillips versus Phil Hellmuth. Classic poker television.

I've always been a major "bracket addict" and seeing brackets associated with poker coupled my two favorite pastimes. I swear, watching that show makes me feel like a poker fan all over again. If you haven't seen it, make sure you check your local listings. I just finished watching the end of round two and now they are down to the final 16. Even though I already know who wins, I'm still lovin' it!

As far as poker on TV goes, the PPT also has a chance to make for some great television as they are going to film the events from the beginning. Tomorrow is the first day of the PPT event at the Mirage, and while Iím not all that excited about the prize pool, I am excited about the format and the potential for the future of televised poker.

With so much great TV poker on the horizon itís an exciting time to be a poker player to say the least. Or a poker fan for that matter.

As for my poker game, Iím not happy with my recent results and think I need to reassert myself a little bit, especially early on. I was fine with the way I played in my last tournament, losing a tough hand with KK vs. AA, but overall there was some sloppy play along the way that I need to fine tune. I still wasnít feeling all that well physically, but overall Iíve developed a bad habit at the poker table that I need to adjust. No, Iím not going to tell you what that bad habit is, but letís just say I need to go to my fiancť Lori for advice on this one.

I feel good about tomorrow since Iíve spotted the hole in my game, but the real test will be whether or not I can plug that hole. The first three hours should tell the story for me I think.

Another note for those interested, I will be at the Wynn on Friday May 13th at 7:00pm awaiting any challengers to a heads up match of their choice (from the list of nine games listed in the forum), for any amount from $100,000 to $500,000. Iíll take on the first player to put up his money, and if time permits I may play more than one match that evening. Time for bedÖ
