A late Night Entry

12 Dec 2004

It's 5:48am right now so I'm going to have to make this short and sweet:

Showed up for the tournament, was busted by 2:00pm- ho hum. Head to the Palms to do a photo shoot with Toronto Life Magazine and then head back to the Bellagio.

There I jumped into a 4000-8000 mixed game. In the mix: Hold'em, Stud, Omaha H/L, Stud H/L, Pot Limit Omaha, No Limit Hold'em, 2-7 NL One draw, and 2-7 Triple Draw. The no limit games are played with a 1000-2000 blind and a 1000 ante with a 100,000 cap- meaning that the most you could lose on any given hand was $100,000.

When I sat in, it was Barry Greenstien, Chip Reese, Doyle Brunson, Gus Hansen, Lyle Berman and myself. Not too longer after Phil Ivey joined us along with Johnny Chan.

Within about an hour and a half I was down about $280,000, but truly feeling good about my play and my prospects in the game. I finally hit some cards and was within $100,000 when Ivey quit and made room for Ming Ly.

Then Doyle and Chip quit and those seats were filled by Chau Giang and John Hennigan. By that point, I was actually winning about $140,000. I lost a pot here, a pot there and was now winning about $30,000 after almost eight hours of play.

I thought about playing longer, but was more interested in watching the heads up match between Lederer and Juanda. If Juanda wins, that's 280 guaranteed points. When I got there, John was up 70,000 to 30,000 playing 1000-2000 limit. It didn't look good for Howard but he hung in there. A few hours later Howard finally hit a rush and was able to eliminate John.

So now I faded the threat of Juanda passing me, and with just the pot limit omaha tomorrow and the main event, I'm looking good for the POY. But wait... out of nowhere, we totally forgot about the always dangerous David Pham! With 18 players in the NL tournament, David has twice the amount of chips of his nearest competitor. If David goes on to win the tournament, he would pass me! Yikes.

It's 6:00am now and I have a dilemma: do I play tomorrow or take the day off and watch football at E-DOG's house? If my decision was based on what I really want to do it's a no brainer- football all the way. However, I'm not so sure that's the "right" decision. I dunno, I guess we'll see how I feel in the morning... er wait... it is the morning! Nevermind.
