AS THE NIGHT GOES ON, I WILL SUPPLEMENT THIS LIST WITH MORE IDEAS, AND TRY TO FILL IN THE EMAIL ADDRESSES YOU NEED. ENCOURAGE ALL OF THOSE PEOPLE TO COMPLETE EVERY STEP ON THIS LIST!!!!

I don't care about radio personalities one bit, so fire Imus and these other douchebags or the guys in New York who made a prank call with an Asian accent. Whatever. They're all being fired by privately owned radio stations that have the right to set the standards however they want.

What I am rabidly against is hypersensitive, unbalanced political correctness.

To wit:

QUOTE
Kike, gook, spic, midget, fag, ******.

Guess which word got the "star treatment".

We live in this society where some people receive more protection than others. In order to prevent hypocrisy, the result is either extending the same "protection" to everyone until society gets to the point that we are all walking on eggshells, or just let people say what they please and offend whom they may and accept the fact that unfettered free speech is more important than protecting feelings.

The media has rights to set their standards, but they also have massive responsibilities being the primary conduit of information. Unfortunately, they use their rights to drive a political correctness motivated agenda instead of using them to allow people to speak freely.

1) I don't know what's going on with O&A. I've heard them, they're not funny, who cares.

I'm not in favor of censorship, obviously, but god know what you do to your regular tv and regular radio in which censorship is an everyday occurence.

Why aren't you fighting the government as hard as you are fighting XM satellite?

Um, I don't get it? Apparently the OP got lost and though he was on opie and anthony's forum, cuz obviously nobody here cares.

I actually hate those guys, they're the opposite of funny.

I love it how some people can view a privately owned company refusal to publish/air someones opinion as a violation of Free Speech.

O & A are complete idiots. They are funny at times, but they act like they are crusaders or are qualified to make statements on serious political issues which they do no research on.

The cause that I remember them fighting for was to be able to use the word nigger. I mean seriously, come on now............you stand for nothing and then decide to campaign for the use of the word nigger. Freedom of speech should be protected, but these guys are blatant racists on a nationally broadcast show with tons of mindless fans (not all) that eat this stuff up and regurgitate it into our society. Sure they dont come out and say we hate niggers, but if you listen to them it is oozing with bigotry towards anybody who is non white american.

So freedom of speech that is "racist" shouldn't be protected?

Whether or not a radio station allows it is not a First Amendment issue.

No fucking shit Sherlock. I said that already.

I was responding to his caveated comment about freedom of speech "but" - when the "but" in question involves unpopular speech- in this case, racist speech.

I dont really have an opinion on that, it is a tough subject and honestly their are strong points for both sides. They tend to get around being outright racist from what I have heard, so I dont really think their show should be censored but it is clear that they have racist views, but they hide it with saying they are pioneers for freedom of speech, which is the most annoying trait they have.

I would hope that these things sort themselves out as seems to be happening here. If they are being racist then hopefully someone has the conviction to get them fired. It would be nice if Society could call this what it is and police itself.

No, it should'nt

So, then basically, only speech that is popular should be protected?

(Welcome to why freedom of speech is such a fragile concept. People only like it when it's used to say things they agree with)

I dont know how you got that, I edited my post about a second after I posted it. I agree it is a fragile concept and after thinking it through I retracted that statement.

We have the first amendment exactly to protect unpopular speech. Popular speech doesn't need protection.

The main reason to protect free speech is because stupid ideas whither in the light of day. They only survive if the proponents can validly claim their ideas are being supressed.

But as has been pointed out, this issue has nothing to do with free speech or first amendment rights. If a company doesn't want idiots saying stupid things, that's their right.
williskl78
I've read the comments so far. It doesn't matter to me whether you are a listener to the OandA show, or any other radio show. Im just letting the word out about how our freedom of speech is under attack. You may be a fan of the OandA show or not. That doesnt matter to me. What matters to me is the government sticking their noses in every little thing that matters LEAST. Instead of focusing on the shape of our nation, they want to focus on things like this. They want to take any kind of entertainment like this and force it out. You may say the government has nothing to do with it. Actually they have EVERYTHING to do with it. The FCC has been trying for years to get their hands on satellite. With the upcoming merger between the two satellite companies, I believe they will finally get their wish. And what XM is doing is protecting who? If you think they are protecting the listeners you are mistaken. I have heard alot worse things on their show before, and nothing was said. Ive heard things on cable television, and other shows that was worse, and nothing happened. Everyone knows what to expect when they turn that channel on in the morning. Entertainment thats suppose to be free from regulations. But thats not the case now. It is a paid subscription that has an extreme language blocker that you can activate if you want. Paid subscription, which means they really have no concern if they lose advertisers. But with people like me trying to get the word out, may get them back on the air sooner than later. You can be a listener to a certain show or not, the point is its going to affect everyone on the air. Its the same ongoing thing with online poker, the big man isn't getting his fair take of the deal and wants to shut it out.

The problem with the above two statements is this: XM and Sirius hire radio personalities like this PRECISELY for speech like what O&A uttered. It's satellite radio, where speech is unregulated, free and unfettered.

This suspension is simply a gut reaction first strike against special interest groups who care more about advancing their political agendas dictating what people should think/act/feel rather than protecting the actual audience the speech is directed at.

The first amendment was crafted exactly with the idea of protecting unpopular speech back in the day. King George wasn't a fan of those colonials making fun of him and he cracked down on the papers. No matter the thought, however unpopular is allowed to be published here in the US.

I don't care that much about Imus or O&A so this doesn't bother me. But I think incidents like this are the main reason Howard Stern is probably going to not renew his contract when it is up. It's hard to have fun on the radio when you are under constant surveillance.

This is what we HOPE from an educated and responsible society. I have lost a bit of my faith in people.

BUT, that will never change the fact that my Libertarian view and hopes on society will always stand strong.

EDIT: Isn't the key ingredient in this story that the government didn't do anything, but the private sector did? Isn't this what we want? People making the choices and not the government? I, kind of, see capitalism working here.

People don't like something, companies see that, things change to favor the people's desires to keep their business.

UNLIKE the education and healthcare monopoly......
