I started getting bored with this debate, so I don't really know if this has been covered, but here's why I think Fallwell is scum and am happy he is dead...

I think televangelists are about the lowest form of human on the planet. They use religion, and specifically fear, to manipulate, control and rob people. Fear of change, fear of immigrants, fear of homosexuals and in general the "other" but most of all fear of hell. They terrify people with hell fire in one breath, then hold out their hands for donations with another. They are the basest and most blatant of con men, praying on the ignorant, the elderly, the sick and the stupid, selling them salvation for 29.99.

Moreover, I think Fallwell is the figurehead of a movement that I find chilling and repugnant. A movement of ignorance and superstition.. a movement that is severely anti-scientific, anti-rational. And it is a movement that wants to force these views on the rest of us, to teach these "values" in our schools, that wants to willfully make America more ignorant, more sheepish, more intolerant.

I think the crowing achievement of Western Civilization is Reason. Fallwell is absolutely an enemy of reason. I'm not certain what percentage of Fallwell genuinely believed the stuff he preached, and what percentage of him was con man.. and I don't think it matters in the slightest. I think he represents, on so many levels, the absolute worst of humanity.

I dislike Fallwell specifically for his views, for his voice, for his power. I dislike what he stands for and the movement he was a leader of much more. I don't believe in heaven, nor do I believe in hell... but if people like this asshat go to heaven, then you can fcking keep it. Because this man was pure scum. If I had the chance, I'd piss on his grave.

End Thread.

Seems most aspects have been covered. I'd compare Falwell to the likes of a Louis Farrakhan. They prey on the insecure, the confused, the angry and keep 'em that way with their fundamentalist views. In the end it's all about the money, always will be.

Fair enough.
Of course it includes anyone who preaches hate against Christians and 'unprotected species'. Obviously that doesn't include people that just don't believe in Jesus...only people that actively seek out Christians for no other reason than to tell them that they are idiots.

This describes pretty much everyone in the 'religion' forums.

Also, I beat this thread by 2 hours. Lock it up.

I agree with the superstition, but probably not in the same way that you do. As I believe that you think that believing in Jesus or even God is 'superstition'. I, on the other hand, dislike all these tele-types that act like they know something that the Bible doesn't say at all. Like... "we're in the end times!", or "Jesus is coming back next summer!", etc etc etc. I find that 'superstition' repugnant. It makes Christians look stupid.

I don't think anyone here has expressed hate towards Christianity. I just think that most people hate Christians, or any religious group that use religion as a way of becoming very wealthy. Most people, from what I've read so far, don't care for someone who says God talks to them. Most people, from what I've read so far, don't care for someone who says hateful things against other groups of people.

I'm pretty sure those are just a few of the legitimate reasons that some posters here aren't terribly upset by the passing of Jerry Falwell.

Is Scram good for FCP? Sure, why the hell not. The one thing he needs to understand is that everyone here is expressing their opinions, and I would never force anyone to accept my opinion, but I would really hope that it would be respected. So far, Scram doesn't seem to actually respect anyone's opinion.

This is probably the only somewhat serious post I'll make in this thread. As I won't put my self on the same level debate wise as most of the other posters here. That includes you Scram. You silly little fuck-tart. icon_suit_heart.gif

According to the man himself, he says that Fallwell came very, very close to the right thing, but his stature and position went to his head and he started acting like a huge douche.

Scram, I see you decided to start a philosophy class and used the question "what makes Jerry Falwell a bad Person?" to kick start it. Sorry if I paraphrased your original statement. There are certain people who are in positions of judgment. In fact its their job and we elect, appoint or hire them to do that job. Part of Human nature is to evaluate and come to conclusions about EVERYTHING. What causes x to turn into Y.
Jerry Falwell was a polarizing figure in the America of the last 30 or so years. So if some people are "glad" to see him pass away, then so be it. If those same people see the need to profess they "hated" a person they never met, then so be it. I think he rather enjoyed his nature. Heck, that little satirical "AD" in Hustler magazine by Larry Flint enabled the expansion and or clearer definition of free speech in our country. So for all his perceived negative affects on American Society that is one good thing he was responsible for. Was he an *******? From my not so clear perspective, he probably was. Thats not to say that he wont have mourners at his up coming interment ceremonies that I'm sure will be covered by the press to a nauseating degree. I'm sure many people are genuinely sadden for loosing him. I for one am not. I only knew of his public persona which was rather unsavory.

MATTHEW 7:1-5:

"Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull the mote out of thine eye; and behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast the mote out of thy brother's eye."

Pretty good philosophical statement there. Funny how professed "holly men" can read and study the Bible for years and just come out with the parts that allow them to control and rule others. In the end, isn't that was religion is? Institutionalization of philosophical precepts.

It's really stupid when people mindlessly say or do something, are completely unable to defend it, yet as soon as someone comes along and makes a decent case for their common ideas, they jump right board, nodding their heads and saying "Yeh, Yeh, that's what I meant all along".

That is what I was saying all along. As I said, things are obviously going by too fast for you to keep up, but I'm quite sure I was the first one to say he was a blasphemous circus leader. Now... toe-may-toe, toe-mah-toe. That means he was "selling God, and keeping the profits". You like to wield that "semantics" word when it's in your favor. Perhaps someone just put it in words that made better sense, but that is PRECISELY what I was saying all along.

Lumping Billy Graham in with Jerry Falwell seems absurd.
But I don't study them enough to debate it.

Stimulating conversation is good, and he certainly accomplished that. But one person makes a post that isn't laid out to his liking and he attacks. He makes no effort to see what people are really trying to say. He has no respect, in my opinion. It seems he thinks more of himself than anyone else here.

If I am one of the ones that come off as hating Christianity, I'd like to know how. It would seem that scram thinks I am one, but I'm truly stumped as to why.

I started this thread off, in a foul mood and just posted the guy was dead and in my opinion, enjoying some time in hell. I didn't realize I'd have to write a thesis on why and have it criticized by the teacher's aide. So I apologize if I didn't make quite clear ALL the reasons I didn't care for him. Also, I never met him, but he was a public figure. So he didn't have to put a gun to my head for me to know that he was full of crap.

I do feel the guy was a bad person because of his views and his lifestyle. Was he entitled to his views? Sure, we all are. But to use a position of power to cram them into the lives of others... I don't care for it. Was he entitled to the riches from his blasphemy? I guess, he did do the work. But I don't think I could whore out something I supposedly held as sacred.

No you don't so don't agree with me just post your opinion so I can twist it into a pretzel with ridiculous comparison's like back when I tried to tie a person with a race of people. I wouldn't let you get away with anything so obviously ridiculous and I would definately ask you if you could back up your opinion with fact, when again it was obviously just an opinion on a poker message board. Oh yeah and I can use word's like theist alot to show I am smart.

A theist believes in a supernatural intelligence who, in addition to his main work of creating the universe in the first place, is still around to oversee and influence the subsequent fate of his initial creation. In many theistic belief systems, the deity is intimately involved in human affairs. He answers prayers; forgives or punishes sins; intervenes in the world by performing miracles; frets about good and bad deeds, and knows when we do them (or even think of doing them).

So now that I explained what a theist is, and that Falwell was one, it really has nothing to do with the fact you hate him. I don't give you the right to hate theist, deist, pantheist or atheists because well, I can say, "But why do you feel that way"

I didn't know what "Free Inquiry" was, but I googled, and see that it's a secular humanist website/magazine. I'm sympathetic to secular humanism, but I myself proably am a bit to nihilistic to be considered one. I would love to read the sales pitch I have supposedly plagiarized.
At any who, I don't know what the " I know, you know, you know I know, I know you know I know but they don't know" line is supposed to mean.. I'm not having some secret 5th level thinking conversation with you, I assure you. I think you're baiting people with boring philosophical tricks with the goal of being a pedant, and I personally find few things worse than that manner of pedantery. Which is why I stopped reading this thread on page two, and picked it up again on page 4.

Personally, there are few things I find worse than people who habitually say "there are few things I find worse than"....
It kinda negates the entire premise.

Anyway, there isn't anything in thread that I was being pedant about. I actually made a bit of an effort to stop that kind of thing when we were starting to devolve into arguments about word usage (hate versus dislike versus distaste versus insert-synonym-here)

I'll drum up that Free Inquiry pamphlet. You certainly didn't plagiarize it word for word, but the phraseology is absolutely identical.

it WOULD seem absurd... until you do see enough of them and realize that it's absurd to defend them
I'M JUST SAYIN'!

Any reasons you have as to your hatred of Billy Graham would be appreciated. He doesn't need defending, and I'm very interesting to know exactly what he has said that is hypocritical or con-manish.

Or maybe you're just spewing hate and bigoted propaganda again.
