We're having a birthday party for my wife on Friday night, and whenever we do something like this her younger brother and sister always bring a bunch of their friends and they're all into the hip hop crap, and they always try to force it down our throats and take over the party. They dont really have any bad intentions, they just dont realize that we hate it.
Anyway, I need to make a few mixed cds with ROCK songs that would be good for a party. I have some of my own ideas but I need a lot more suggestons.
Anything from modern to classic rock...as long as it has a guitar. (well actually some electronic music might be ok too)
OK, 1, 2, 3....GO

Albums that will work for a party.....
Beck - Midnite Vultures, maybe my fav party album
Basement Jaxx - Rooty, electronic-pop. If you need more easy-listening electronic, go with Fatboy Slim's You've Come a Long Way, Baby
Bob Marley - any album will do, but for a party, go with Legend or Exodus
The Cars - The Cars if you want to throw in some `80s
Andrew W.K. - I Get Wet if you just want loud music about partying
Jamiroquai - go with Emergency on Planet Earth
as suggested above, any Zeppelin or Stones album is good. Zeppelin I and IV might be good, Stones, go with Let it Bleed or Exile on Main St.
Robert Randolph & The Family Band - Unclassified
Slightly Stoopid - Everything You Need
Sly & The Family Stone - Stand!
Tom Petty - Highway Companion
Widespread Panic - Til the Medicine Takes
This should just about cover it.....

For Bob Marley I'd go with Babylon by Bus, or the find the Sasalito(sp?) recordings in '70 or '71.
Just a whole lot more energy in the live shows.
Depending on the mood of the party, throw in some Chuck Berry, Jack Johnson, or Sublime.

Can you tell me some particular songs from these albums that I should check out? I dont have time to download the entire albums, and I cant afford to buy them right now.
Also Sublime and Jack Johnson are musts. Do you listen to CYY, sublime? Thats what I listened to when I was in Maine...it was a pretty good little station.

I
am CYY.
Ha, just kidding. I wonder if they still use that, I bet they do. I used to listen to it, but I really haven't listened to the radio much at all recently. I'll have to next time I am in the car.
Have a blast with the party, and don't be afraid to say what Scram said. (We really don't like hip hop, it's her party, we'd appreciate it if you let go...)
edit -The two Chuck Berry's I would recommend are: Memphis, Tennessee and Maybelline. People will be singing at those, although anything from Blues Berry would work.

"Cheeseburger In Paradise" and "Margaritaville" definitely are great party sing-alongs.
Dave Matthews Band (particularly songs off of "Crash" give you some more mid-90's cred). Other mid/late-90's potentials: Blues Traveler, Cake, Blind 182, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, REM.

depending on the age of the crowd, 80s music usually kills at parties. some often forgotten classics that people are excited to hear:
(most of this stuff works better later in the night when people are pretty drunk)
modern english - melt with you
the cure - just like heaven
hall & oates - private eyes
michael jackson - rock with you
inxs - need you tonight
starship - we built this city
wang chung - everybody have fun tonight
belinda carlisle - heaven is a place on earth
madonna - all of it, girls <3 madge
and then of course everyone loves a healthy smattering of cock rock like...
whitesnake - here i go again
motley crue - kickstart my heart
joan jett - i love rick n roll
winger - seventeen (if i'm at a party and someone plays this song i approach them and make out with them violently)
the possibilities are endless, really.
also, if you don't play maneater by nelly furtado at your party, i don't want to be there.
