when you don't raise preflop, people can flop a straight draw with something like 4d5d, which turns into a flush draw on the turn, giving them a lot of outs, which they get to make a better hand than two pair to win the pot.
Raising to $15 or $20 preflop would have probably taken it down preflop and won you a small pot instead of you losing a big pot.
I had thought that, but the way these players were playing the would have called the raise. Besides he is calling roughly pot sized bet against someone who has repeatedly shown cards that have a part of the board. He wasn't getting the odds to chase his flush or the three remaining aces on the flop.
