Naked_Cowboy
The whole survey seems to be written by someone who has a very limited knowledge of poker. Besides the survey not distinguishing NLHE vs LHE, there are pretty significant holes in the following questions:

"Do you play against the game or the players?" How exactly do you play against the game? As in, playing against a computer? Level 0 thinking and playing with a focus only on your own hand, or what?

"How often do you play? Once a week? Every night? Whenever you feel like it?
How did you get into the schedule you are in now?" Does this refer to hold em only? If I spend a night playing nothing but HORSE, would that count because LHE is included?

"Have you ever played more then one variable of Texas Hold'em and if so which do you prefer and why? For example Online poker vs. poker you play in a bar, casino or just a friendly no cash game with friends."
Does she mean variant? Seems tournaments, full ring, short-handed, etc. would be a more "logical" extension of the survey - unless she's trying to get at what venue a player prefers.

"Do you play different forms of poker or simply Texas Hold'em? What do you find so intriguing from Texas Hold'em that other poker games may not include?"
How could someone answer this question if they only play hold em. Their second answer would be purely speculative.

Is this a college or high school paper? Are these random questions thrown together without a thesis or direction for the paper established? I'm 100% sure i'm being an ***, but honestly I'd rather help guide someone onto a topic to write about that will come out as a good paper than filling out a survey for someone who doesn't know what / why they're asking.

yeah one of my friends is writing college paper about poker players. To be honest I don't know the exact topic of the paper. I just filled out the questions, if you would like I could find out for you.

and do you ever chat when you are playing online? I have seen you a few times and get nothing. icon_biggrin.gif

1) are you sure it's me? I play pretty much only on full tilt right now

2) if i'm sitting down to really play, it's usually 4-6 tables, so I miss most chat. If I'm playing less, I may catch what you say

Some of the questions do show limited familiarity but that's most people, just gave it a shot anyway.

Yeah, that's me. And we've definitely played together, I have some notes on you on my other computer I think wink.gif

Anyway, if this friend wants any help with direction for the paper or wants to run her eventual thesis by someone, let me know.

i didn't mean it in a derogatory way at all. my notes are usually moves that worked / didn't work and situational things. I seem to remember you were a solid player. I saw in your blog you're going to cash out / redeposit?

Texas Hold'em Poker Interview
In some parts of the interview questions Texas Hold'em will be referred to simply as Poker.
Thanks.

Why do you play poker? What is it that draws you to the game? I love the game because it's like a mental war. When I'm at the table (live) I feel like i'm in combat and it's extremely fun and also the money is great.

Do you play against the game or the players? Both...if you get 23 and someone moves in it's hard to call even if u know they're bluffing. But if you have K 6, it's a different story. It's a combination.

If you were to rank yourself on a scale of 1-10 how well do you think you play Texas Hold'em? lol....that's a very fun question...I think I have a lot a lot more to learn because you can never figure the game out. But I can't answer that question because there is no one to compare me to. If you worded the question as The Grinder as 10, Greg Raymer as 8, Jamie gold as 4, it'd be easier to answer. But I believe I play better than 95% of other players. It also varies a lot...you can't play your A game 100 percent of the time no matter how hard you try. It's just not possible. So it's a very tough Q.

What do you think you do particularly well? What do you think you have mastered about the game? Spotting betting patterns and using tells (more like the mannerism of the player rather than a particular tell...I just ask myself would he act like this if he had a strong hand, what is he trying to make me think...and I'm really good at answering these types of questions.) Also, I'm really good at adjusting to most player's strategies and playing accordingly. Also, I'm really good at bankroll management, and most of the time I can recognize when I'm not playing optimally and I quit.

What do you wish to improve or work on? Is there anything you are trying to learn from the game? Any trick you are trying to master? Example: Bluffing, tell signs reading people etc. I try to improve on all of the aspects because I don't think i'm perfect at any of them. I just try to learn and read and join different poker websites and I learn stuff on the way, various stuff not anything specific.

How long have you been playing? 2 1/2 years

When did you start? When I was 16 playing with my friends at school for 1$ buy ins, I schooled them and started a 5 dollar bankroll and never went broke from there.

How did you get into the game? I started playing for fun with my brother and his friend (although the rules we played by were fuked...but that's how I started)

How often do you play? Once a week? Every night? Whenever you feel like it? I played whenever there was a game...I never said no to a game.
How did you get into the schedule you are in now? I started playing semi-pro about 1/2 year ago and I play when I have time, I don't have a concrete schedule but I play every day.

Was it an instant draw to the game or did you gradually work your way into playing often? Instant draw...and i never grew bored of it which is good because i grow bored of lots of things.

What do you think is the hardest thing to learn about the game? Mood management and tilt control (experience helps)

Do you play at all in a casino like atmosphere with a lot of money at stake? If so how do you know when to call it quits and stop? I'm too young to play in casinos but i definetly will because live poker is WAY more fun for me.

Do you think the game of Texas Hold'em is addicting? If so, why? TV is addictive as well and so is the computer and so is everything ppl enjoy. It's fun and if you're commited to get good you can have potential to make tons of $, and that's what makes it addicitive.

What is your favorite part about the game? honestly, I love playing and that's it...I love everyting about the game

Do you ever take what you have learned while playing the game and apply it to your daily life? If so can you give an example of when this has happened? i can read ppl better when the lie, lol. doe that count?
For example: While playing the game you get really good at reading people. Do you use this kill outside of the game to read people on the streets?

What is your definition of a good poker player? I can't categorize a style becasue LAG can be profitable and TAG can be profitable. A good poker player adjusts to his surroundings and adapts quickly, is observant and is dedicated to get better and does not think he is the best and get his ego get in the way and play good players. Game selection is key to maximizing profits but some players who are great at playing, aren't smart with respect to that and want to be the BEST. There is no THE BEST in poker because there are MANY great players. A well rounded poker player would be a good player.

Have you ever played more then one variable of Texas Hold'em and if so which do you prefer and why? For example Online poker vs. poker you play in a bar, casino or just a friendly no cash game with friends. I prefer live poker with serious players and then online poker and then friendly games.

What are the different benefits to playing face to face vs. playing online? Do your strategies change and if so how? You can intimidate ppl more, be very confident and players will fear you. Online you're jsut a screen name and until you get a reputation online players don't fear you, and being feared can win you many extra pots.

Do you play different forms of poker or simply Texas Hold'em? What do you find so intriguing from Texas Hold'em that other poker games may not include? I only play NL texas holdem but I plan on learning other games when I quit school...after this semster...with school I don't have enough time to learn other games while making enough $.

How seriously do you take Texas Hold'em? Is it simply a game for you? Is it a job? Do you get extremely upset when you lose or do you simply brush it off and try again next time? My biggest weakness is I get upset when I lose. A lot of the time I get up from the game but it bugs me. More if I make a stupid play than if I get sucked out but i can get pissed when either happens. I still need to get better at tilt contorl and I wont have to get out of the game when I do something stupid, I could simply adjust to my new table image and proceed.

There are some who say that once you play a game as work it is no longer considered a game but rather a source of income and therefore has all the fun taken out of it? Do you agree or disagree and why? Disagree...I love the game and it's my job...it's both...but I don't consider myself working, I'm playing for a living.

A lot of Texas Hold'em is about tells. Do you have any tells that you are aware of? What tells have you noticed on others? I focus on a person's mannerism and betting pattern and try to figure out whether he is strong or weak. I personally don't know any of my tells but I'm pretty sure I'm hard to read because I weak avatars and a hat when I play and I try to do the same pose and bet the chips the same way. I could still work on the way I bet them but I think it's pretty consistent.

Are there any poker stories that you can remember and are particularly fond of? Feel free to digress.

Have you ever researched the game? Read books, looked things up online, listened to poker radio or poker pod casts? Or did you simply learn by playing? All the time. I learned by playing but then as soon as I discovered books and stuff i bought a bunch and research the game online.

Are there other ways that you enjoy poker without paying it? Example: follow the World Series of Poker? Do you collect poker chips or have poker decorations etc. I enjoy watching good poker on TV, most of the poker on tv is crap though. PAD and high stakes poker are some of my favourite poker shows. I also enjoy the WPT and PPT.

How important is bluffing when playing Texas Hold'em? Could you ever win the game without bluffing the entire time? If you'e playing dumb opponents than yes. But bluffing is a crucial part of any successful player's strategy. Without strategy ppl could play you on auto pilot. Bet and fold if you raise.

What is the goal of poker? Is it to win? Is it to get the money? Is it to defeat your opponents? To get as good as I can and make as much money as I can and to make as little mistakes as I can.

Are there unspoken rules in poker? If so, what are they? I don't understand this Q

What do other people think about your love for the game? Do they mind at all, do they approve or disapprove? My parents think I should stay in school, but the only person that understands is my brother because he knows how good i am because we play very often HU

Do you have any questions or comments from this interview? It's long, hope it helps.

Thank you so much for all you help!!!! I know that was a lot of questions. I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out. Thanks again!!!
