I was curious to see how many of their own draft choices teams had on their current rosters...

QUOTE (serge @ Wednesday, March 21st, 2007, 12:25 PM) *
Also would like to add the following components of the Leafs are all Leaf draft picks

Tomas Kaberle.....1996 ..#204 overall
Kyle Wellwood.....2001 #134 overall
Ian White...........2002 #191 overall
Ponikarovsky.....1998 #87 overall
Alex Steen.........2002 #24 overall
Matt Stajan........2002 #57 overall
Carlo Colaiacovo...2001 #17 overall
Yanik Perreault.....1991 #47 overall(re acquired)
Nik Antropov....1998 #10th overall
So as you see there are 8 players on the current roster who have been drafted by the leafs....Also we can see that they have really drafted well in the later rounds....We havent had the luxury of 5 top 2 draft picks back to back like the Senators or the Penguins...

Thanks

did you includes undrafted FA's in that? i actually though new jersey was leading the league in own draft picks but we lost hale at the deadline and i guess greene, rafalski and madden were all undrafted
runthemover
as a sharks fan I knew we were highest (they've mentioned it on our telecast before) I was surprised to see Anaheim so low. I didn't think edmonton would have that many. Not surprising at all to see some of the bad teams with so few. phoenix only has 2? good god.

No I did not include undrafted free agents in my list of drafted players. smile.gif

Anaheim has had some recent success signing free agents out of college.

I was going to say the same thing, but he probably doesn't know how Anaheim acquired him. He probably thinks Penner grew from magic beans.

Seeing San Jose at the top I realize this is what Dean Lombardi wants to do with the Kings. I have no problem with it.

I think it's necessary with the salary cap.
doox
I thought Pittsburgh was up there or highest - didn't realize San Jose was the highest, though.

I really dont know what this actually means...

Is it good to have a high number of own draft picks or a good mixture of both??

Anaheim,Atlanta and Nashville are succesful teams without too many draft picks...

I am very happy with the current leafs...Good draftpicks(especially late) like Kaberle and Wellwood
and also good trades Sundin,Tucker,Mccabe

The notion is that the Leafs build through free agency...This is not true at all
runthemover
serge it just gives a little insight into how these teams have been built. the reason people say the leafs "build through free-agency" is because they tend to sign high-profile name players. Older guys who have made big impacts (many of them canadian) sort of like the yankees except without the championships.

lets see if I can name the 15 sharks. my guess

hannan
vlasic
ehrhoff (sp is so wrong)
davidson
clowe
bernier
michalek
cheechoo
marleau
toskala
nabokov
smith
pavelski
goc
rissmiller

edit: left carle off. I think riss was a undrafted fa

I will argue that one way is not better than another...With the salary cap it will be very difficult to keep a team together like the Penguins or the Sabres...

THe Sabres are already facing it and the Penguins have a 3-5 year window before they run into problems.

yes, if it was so easy then everyone would be doing it, but the draft is the best way to build an organization. it means if you lose people you can replace them cheaply. I think the pens expect that before that 3-5 year window they will have at least one championship. that's the idea. then you must scale back and rebuild for another championship.

I think any "contender" really only has 1 or sometimes 2 or 3 years where they really have a chance to win the cup. I would argue that teams that build through the draft have a better chance at extending this window than a free-agency built team. you can't keep everyone every year, so you need to plug those holes. young guys allow this to be done cheaply. that's why a team like the sharks will make a run this year and even though they will lose some of their assests, they will most likely have a chance at another cup in the next few seasons.

Leafs have been running into problems for what, 40 years?

Aren't those good problems to have? As opposed to having to keep together your pile of Leaf mediocrity? I'd rather be faced with the dilemna of trying to keep together a young superstar team anyday....

why cant you actually make reasonable points instead of bashing...

The fact of the matter is Buffalo will have to let go of one or two of their top players next year...

Yes, and they have someone like Stafford to step right into the open spot. Who are the Leafs grooming to take over for Sundin?

You are completely oblivious and trying to have an intelligent discussion with you is impossible.

I actually believe that Buffalo is a rarity when it comes to AHL talent....It wont work for most teams...

People dont give us enough credit..Good young guys playing for the Marlies.

I guessed SJ correctly, but then i recalled I too may have seen it on one of their telecasts. I was also watching tonights game at the time, so that helped.

As Im watching, I really believe this team is my favourite for the Cup. I think they just have the kind of fwd lines the Canes had last year, but with more top end talent. And I have to believe Joe+Marleau will have a chip on their shoulder about past playoff disappointments. Im not a fan of goalie tandems, but theirs is sick.

Yeah, I like them to hoist the Cup. Think I'll find the odds and lay some coin down.

And what an impressive way to win if they do....15drafted players, wow.

I wont debate the best player=Thornton part for now, but I will say they acquired him due to their drafting as well. Sturm+Stuart original Sharks.
digitalmonkey
I just wanted to add that Buffalo also has guys like Afinogenov, Kotalik and Gaustad that they drafted but are not on the current roster due to injury. However, this likely wouldn't affect the total as guys like Paille, MacArthur and Stafford are on the current roster due to those injuries.

I think MapleLeafsPoker touched upon the thing that Serge doesn't seem to comprehend. Drafting well and developing quality prospects gives a team great assets that can be used to add big pieces to the puzzle. No Thornton wasn't a Sharks draft pick, but as was pointed out Sturm and Stuart were and they were traded for Thornton. This is where the Leafs have gone wrong in the past...I don't feel they've developed many quality assets.
