Full Version: Cdub's "who Do You See?"

CardWarfare
It seems whenever I watch a movie with friends, or anyone for that matter, I see at least one actor that I am unable to accept at first. It doesn't have anything to do with the quality of performance, but because I've seen that person in something else before, and they are forever etched into my mind as the character I originally saw them portray.

And so begins this thread. If anyone actually cares about this, I'll make some more. I was going to make this in OT General, but I figured since it is actors/actresses, the movie forum would be the place to do it.

First one, inspired by a recent "Clerks II"-ish debate between a friend of mine, where I made fun of Lord of the Rings and said that the X-Men movies were better.

Ian McKellen- Magneto or Gandalf?

showstopper24
x men was a great movie, but it is no Lord of the rings.
Ian mckellen is such a good actor that i really don't see gandalf when i watch x-men, but if someone asks me what mckellen has been in, my first answer is the lord of the rings.

I just despise the LOTR series. I don't even really have a reason for hating it, besides the fact that I do.

The Lord of the Rings is infinitely better than the X-men.

You are sick. Medicate!

Yeah yeah, someone's already gone there. That's not the point.

Actually, I said "Hey, it's Ian McKellen."

So neither, really.

Without the beard, he's not Gandalf.

I saw a preview today for a movie with Rainn Wilson and I couldn't help but laugh whenever I saw Rainn on the screen. It was especially hard when he spoke because I would just imagine this guy was Dwight and was about to say something like, "My uncle bought me fireworks" or, "I'm 99% sure that's not the real Benjamin Franklin"
king_tanner
I liked Lord of the Rings better, but he looks more like Magneto in real life which is why I yell out MAGNETO

and for the same reason when I see Sean Astin I yell ZOMG ITS RUDY and not HEY LOOK ITS SAMWISE GAMGEE (sp?)
Moneyball16
Im with CardWarfare here. The only way I would watch LOTR again is if I was suffering from insomnia and wanted a remedy. I see Magneto.
Jadaki
LOTR > Xmen, but he looks a lot more like Magneto without makeup so that was my choice.

When I see Sean Astin I think it's the dirty gay hobbit though, screw Rudy and anything to do with ND football.

ughhh...this is a tough one. I suppose I'd have to go with Gandalf.

Strangely enough LOTR was just about everything I've ever wanted out of a fantasy movie but I find the X-Men movies have more replay value. It's partly to not wanting to sit for 3+ hours but now that I know how it all turns out in LOTR I don't find myself wanting to watch it over and over again.

Dude, you're not supposed to SAY that. You're supposed to say "The Scottish Play"! Oh, actually, it's only when you're inside a theatre. My mistake!

As much as I appreciate the books, I tend to dislike them because the writing style is to drawn out for my taste. I read them twice, once when I was in school and again before the movies came out, never again. I don't think I've found anyone who didn't like the movies then read the books and liked them.

i saw the first movie then wanted to read the first book. I loved the hobit so i thought it would be good, but i hated fellowship. then i tried to read two towers before i saw the movie and i only got through a few chapters. i then saw the movie and reread what i had already read and i loved it. i realized that i would probably like the books after i saw the movie, except for fellowship, so i waited until i saw return of the king before i read it...and i thought it was a terrific book.

Anyways, has anybody read the hobbit?

Sorry, it's a pretty nerdy thread, but I'm entitled once in a while.

Being as awesome as I am, I find that my lemons are forgotten easily, while my highlights play over and over in people's minds like a re-run of SportsCenter.

Also, I'm a bit surprised that no one's mentioned the Nazi war criminal from Apt Pupil. I had completely forgotten about that movie but now it's at the top of my DVDs-to-buy list.
