Full Version: River Bet Sizing

I've been trying to work on extracting the max possible on the river. These two hands came up yesterday so I thought I'd post.

Hand 1:

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $6 BB (5 handed) Hand History Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com (Format: FCP)

SB ($191)
BB ($1039.70)
UTG ($591)
MP ($1276.10)
Hero ($591)

Preflop: Hero is Button with 9 icon_suit_heart.gif , 9 icon_suit_club.gif .
2 folds, Hero raises to $24, 1 fold, BB calls $18.

Flop: ($51) 9 icon_suit_spade.gif , 7 icon_suit_heart.gif , K icon_suit_heart.gif (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets $35, BB calls $35.

Turn: ($121) T icon_suit_heart.gif (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets $75, BB calls $75.

River: ($271) K icon_suit_spade.gif (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets $457 (All-In)...

So in this hand, I thought there was a small chance he'd made the flush, but mostly felt like he was stubbornly calling me down with a K. So the river is gin for me either way, and while a good player definitely wouldn't stack off here with trip kings, and probably not a flush, I thought this guy would. So I just shoved in for almost twice the pot.

Hand 2:

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $6 BB (5 handed) Hand History Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com (Format: FCP)

UTG ($220)
MP ($338.70)
Button ($679.25)
SB ($1277.10)
Hero ($1162)

Preflop: Hero is BB with J icon_suit_heart.gif , T icon_suit_club.gif .
2 folds, Button raises to $21, 1 fold, Hero raises to $75, Button calls $54.

Flop: ($153) 9 icon_suit_diamond.gif , 3 icon_suit_club.gif , K icon_suit_heart.gif (2 players)
Hero bets $120, Button calls $120.

Turn: ($393) T icon_suit_spade.gif (2 players)
Hero checks, Button checks.

River: ($393) T icon_suit_heart.gif (2 players)
Hero bets $250...

So I don't even want to hear about the 3betting with JTo smile.gif Anyway, he calls, so for sure he's got a hand. I flop gutshot, so I take a stab, and he calls. We check check on turn, and I river him obviously. But I don't think he has a hand to pay off a shove, but I think there is a good chance he has QQ or JJ and will call something reasonable, so I bet like 2/3 the pot.

Not tryin to be a ****, but I removed the results, including the villains action after your bet.

I like first hand, whatever he has been calling with is calling off stack 80 percent of time. He either has an obvious flush or trip kings, in which case he is letting neither go.

Im not a huge fan of 3 betting 10Jo but otherwise well played. He is calling with lots of curious hands on river due to your turn check. One question though, if he pushes over us on river we fold unless hes aggro donk right?

I'd tone down the bet on the river for the first hand a bit. The way it looks with your betting, you're betting the flush, and villain isn't paying you off with just a king.
If villain has a hand good enough to call with less than 2:1 odds, you might be in trouble.

Of course, like you said, if villain isn't too great, good overbet.

I left them in on purpose. Wasn't posting for advice on the hands, just as some examples for stratpop to mull over.

Hand 2: Shoving river is better imo, I'm not sure why you think your bet looks more like a bluff then a shove would

Really? It seems to me not many people have the balls to bluff push the river but they can always manage to throw out a good ole fashioned pot sized bet. Whenever someone takes the push line I think it's a monster trying to acquire maximum value, a monster trying to look suspicious to get a call, or in some instances a bluff. Hard for people to look someone up though for an all-in though even if I am suspicious. Unless we have strong read villian will call push, I think 2/3 pot or pot is best here.

I agree

On the first hand, I would bet probably bet 200..I don't think he could actually call on the end with a king when you shove

I just didn't think he'd be willing to call a shove. But I felt like he was willing to believe, for the right price, that I was bluffing.

I like the way you played both hands. I think its perfect. Hand 1 hes paying you off with a flush, K, or sevens full (unlikely holding). If he has a busted draw he folds for 6 dollars so whats the difference, might as well get max value. Second hand is WP
