What do you think is the worst contract in the NHL right now?

I use this site for my numbers www.nhlnumbers.com

Some of the ones I think are bad...(I only listed 06-07 salaries)

Ed Jovanovski ($7,000,000)
Pavel Kubina ($5,000,000)
Jose Theodore ($5,5000,000)
Kim Johnsson ($4,050,000)
Adrian Aucoin ($4,000,000)
Nicolai Khabibulin ($6,750,000)
Jay McKee ($4,000,000)
Alexei Yashin ($7,600,000)
doox
Rick DiPietro's insanely long contract. It actually bumped Yashin's off my personal top spot, but at least the Isles are consistant.

I don't really think it's as bad as some people would lead you to believe. If he develops as well as everyone expects then he will be underpaid in the latter part of his career. If he gets injured...well, that's what insurance is for. Plus, the cap room would be available if he's on IR.

is this really too much for a solid D-man? I'm just saying this based on what I saw from him in the playoffs last year.

I'll add Brad Richards ($7 000 000)

This was my frist thought.

Gonchar'ss was the worst for the 1st half of last year, but it's looking like a solid sign now.

I think he cashed in bigtime with his play last season. IMO $4,000,000 is an overpayment for McKee especially when you facter in he's also signed for 3 more seasons at $4,000,000 per.
Fubar The Sperm
Being from Ottawa I'd have to say Gerbers 3.5 million is pretty bad. Didn't seem like a bad idea at the time but I bet Ottawa wish's they had that money back to maybe keep Havlat or sign some one else.

Bobby Holik at 4.25

The only thing worse than Columbus paying Sergei Fedorov $6 million and Adam Foote $4.6 million this season is the fact that they have to do it again next season.

Fedorov - 15G, 20A, -7
Foote - 3G, 8A, -17

Just sad...
rinswun
4.6million for adam foote
4.0million for adrian aucoin

those 2 stand out for me
Speed Limit
Clemmenson, Brodeur's backup.
They should just give some homeless man some bread and some goalie pads, he'll never see action anyway.

His cap hit is $2.5 million, which will be a bargain if he hits the stride he's projected for. Definitely pricey for a guy who's scored 23 points all year though.
WestcoastCanuck
I think Mckee is a bit overpaid, but it doesn't fall into the same category as the other contracts, IMO. St. Louis was in a position where they had to overpay a little bit to attract good free agents.

For what Aucoin has done so far, his contract is awful. It didn't look that bad at the time he signed it, but he really hasn't done much.

I haven't seen anyone mention Samsonov yet. I know he only has one year left, but he stinks.

I think Bulis is overpaid at 1.1 million...

Oh yeah. Getting him was one thing, extending him before the season started was just brain dead.

Alexander Mogilny: 3. 5 million

No one forced them to match the offer, just think, right now he could be yet another Flyers player who isn't living up to his potential.
WestcoastCanuck
Kesler got off to an awful offensive start, but he was really starting to turn it around before his injury. There was no way, IMO, the Canucks could not match the offer sheet. He is getting paid a bit to much, but I wouldn't lump him in there with the other guys mentioned. He also clearly has the potential to get better (while being paid around 1.9 mill for the next little while), something that can't be said for guys like Theodore or Aucoin.

first, I dont get the Jovo contract. Is that right, or is that a front loaded thing? They gave him 7mil a year?

I think Jose is one of the worst, just because of the complete waste he has become.

as far as overpaying a UFA, McKee, Mogilny come to mind.

My opinion is that this was a great deal. I will bet that this will be a steal for the Islanders, but the one problem i foresee is DiPietro wanting to renegotiate once he becomes grossly underpaid in the future.

he is already one of the better goalies in the NHL, and still very young.

especially if the salary cap keeps going up.

Bryan McCabe - $7.15 m

That sickens me.

Edit: I realize it's staggered, but still gross.
doox
Well, maybe it might provide him with long-term security and the Isles with a long-term, lower-salary goalie. Then again, a lot can happen in 15 years, and it's just ridiculous to put that many years into the agreement. Since the topic is worst contracts, I'm not necessarily approaching this one from a team-only perspective. I think it's bad from the Isles P.O.V. but even worse from DiPietro's.

It's fantastic for Dipietro. If he had sign a 3 year deal, then he has a career ending injury, he's got nothing after 3 years. Now he has 60 MILLION GUARANTEED no matter what happens to him.
doox
If this is such a fantastic deal for both sides (security for DiP and guard against inflation for Wang and Co.), why aren't more deals like this being done?

oh, I still think it's a bad deal for the Islanders. It's only a good deal for them in the absolute best case scenario.

Oh, I didn't realize the mere mention of a player constituted a summary.

Perhaps he reads this forum and got his idea from this thread.

The reason more GM's haven't done a deal like DiPietro's is that the consensus amongst virtually everyone in the league is: if DiPietro sucks, then you've wasted the money. If he's even an average starting goalie, he's going to end up underpaid and want to renegotiate. They think the deal is ludicrous. The NHLPA, on the other hand, is quietly jumping up and down.... LOL

Bryan Mccabe is in the top 10 in defenceman scoring...has a rating of Plus 6...

Kaberle and Mccabe might not be Pronger and Niedermayer..However offensively they are pretty close...

I'm expecting him to settle for a little less (than he could get) so he can play out west (i.e. Los Angeles).

Why? Did he hear Elisha Cuthbert needs a new man now that Avery's been run out of town?

That's a joke. +6? If he's making that much money, he should be among the +- leaders of the league. And a defenseman having offense prowess is just a bonus. Defensively, he's mediocre at best. That is the most important thing in a franchise defenseman. Take Lidstrom for example. biggrin.gif

Forsberg. 1 mil for, what, five weeks? 3 games, 2 assists and an injured groin later....Luckily it's only a year long, but still.

And is Theodore in a contract year?
