No one else that I know is awake right now.

I just got back from taking my dog to the animal hospital. I caught her chewing on something which turned out to be a big chunk of caked rat poison from the basement. I guess hubby put some near the furnace a few years ago, long before we decided to get a dog. No original packaging, so we don't know if it's "just" the blood thinning kind (which they can usually treat with antiemetics and vitamin K) or the blood thinning/neuro toxic combo which they can't fix if too much is absorbed. We got her there pretty quickly after giving her syrup of ipecac at home and they gave her H2O2 to also help induce vomiting. They said she did get a lot of it out, which of course also means that she ate a lot of it. She's normally very energetic and she just looked so pathetic laying there.

If anyone here is into such things, a good thought or prayer for Kayla would really be appreciated.

And don't ever buy the mouse/rat poison with the neuro toxin in it. Or don't live near the woods and get field mice in your basement.

i'm so sorry to hear that. I loved my little doggie when she was still alive and something like this would've killed me to see. I'm praying for ya.

Good luck with the pup!!!!!!!!

I had a similar thing happen to my dog. She decided that the bowl of potpourii was a good snack. She ate it all, pine cones and everything. She was very sick for over a week, IV's, stayed with the Vet and all. But she pulled through and is now over 15 years old. We'll all hope that your pup is a fighter and get's better soon.

Thanks guys !

So far, so good. We got to take Kayla home this evening icon_dance.gif

She'll have to be on the vitamin K blood clotting agent for 20 days and have follow up blood work, etc, but she's eating, drinking, and being her normal lovable self.

I guess the neuro toxicity issue (if it even was that kind of poison) will show up within 10 - 86 hours, so we have a few days of watching her and hoping for none of those symptoms.

I'm just so glad she's home icon_biggrin.gif

Glad she turned out fine... I've been through the same thing

It wasnt my dog, but awhile back I was at the neighbors house playing poker with the group when someone noticed that "Tiffy" was eating rat poision under the table. She had found it somewhere outside and (thankfully) brought it in to eat it.

Of course, it was a Sunday night and the vets were all closed. Dale ran to the upstairs to find the emergency number before I could tell him what to do, so I went into the bathroom and found a bottle of hydrogen peroxide to "administer" down her throat. By the time he returned, Tiff had puked the poision up and was still heaving, leading his wife to believe that she was dying. I recieved the evil eye for a while, but when the vet call back he told them that I had done the right thing.

I learned this "gag" from frequenting a few bars in my lifetime...for once it did good instead of evil.

Alway keep a bottle in the house for such emergencies...and in the glovebox for use on the loud-mouth drunk at the local strip club.

Tiffy turned out fine.

For some reason though, the players there never leave an open beer unguarded now.

go figure...
