So, I have some extra cash lying around, and I'm really considering picking one of these things up. My PS2 never survived the move home from college, but I think I'd rather get a hand-held than a full system. I so far this looks like my best choice. Lots of games, plays movies, and looks to be solid quality.

Does anyone have one of these things? Anything I should know before picking one up?

not trying to sway you here, but have you tried a Nintendo DS?

No. That's why I made this thread. I haven't played a hand-held since the original GameBoy, so I know virtually nothing. The DS looks good too, I just don't have any idea which would be a better buy.

Also, if anyone has any tips on good games, throw those in as well. The GTA games look like a must-buy for the PSP, and I'm also anxiously awaiting MLB The Show 2007

The better buy IMO is the DS, mainly because the DS is $120 cheaper than the PSP. I'm one of those people that likes the mature games, but I have found some of the Mario titles to be very fun. Also the DS has last remaining Final Fantasy not released in the US exclusively on it's console. I own a DS Lite and love it to death. I will probably own a PSP at some point, but not until the price drops about $100.

EDIT: I was going to say that the GTA games for the PSP are also on the PS2, but I re-read your post and saw that your PS2 didn't survive the move home.

FF games were never my cup of tea, and Mario games are the kind of things I tend to get bored with. The reason the PSP appealed to me was because it has most of the games I liked for PS2. I've been out of the video game loop for a while, but I tend to play a lot of sports games and such. Arcade games are also a big favorite.

I'm messing around on BestBuy.com and I found something that swayed me. It's gonna be a tough arguement for the DS after I saw this.

Is that because it sucks? or because you have another full system that you play more? or because you like dudes?

I love my PSP! I have a 1 GB memory stick. I have about 7 games saved with mutiple files on each, and over 100 songs, and I STILL havent made a dent in the memory. Im going to start gettnig some video on it, then we'll see. I love mine and use it daily to kill time. MLB 06 the Show is my favorite with GTA and Madden also up there.

The GTA games on the PSP aren't ports, they're entirely new stories.

Has anyone played them? I saw there are two; Vice City Stories and Liberty City. LCS is listed as #1 on bestbuy.com on their list of top 10 PSP games.

I'm well aware of that, but they have ported Liberty City Stories onto the PS2 and there are plans to port the next one onto the PS2 as well

it would probably act more as a paper weight for me right now though... otherwise I'd be all over it... I do have the extra money... just don't wanna spend it... however, if I could get it for a hundo, I'd be all over it... paper weight or not...

I really enjoy spending money on useless things. Almost as much as I enjoy spending time on useless things.

For the past few months I really haven't spent much money at all, except on presents for other people, which is why I'm doing this. I'm way too selfish to go this long without buying myself something cool.

My buddy, who's a huge video game nerd, just got a PSP recently and loves it. He showed me a movie on it too and it looks pretty damn good for something that small. Only drawback I can think of is that you have to buy movies in an entirely new format.

Or invest in the 1 GB stick and rip them from your own collection.

Just bought a PSP for my fiance for Valentines Day, he loves it. I got him one of the ATV games and Socom. He's really enjoying it so far. The graphics are wicked for a hand held in my opinion.
bdc30
I had one when they first came out. Was ok, but nothing special. The games were alright, graphics for a handheld were first rate. I wasn't keen on buying movies that would ONLY play on that. Here's how I judge the worth of the PSP: I lost it (had a former friend take it - whatever) and never bothered or had any interest in replacing it.

Meh. There are better things I'd spend $300 on.
eYank
I have both: PSP has much more games similar to PS2, so if you havent had a PS2 the games on a PSP are more like them. The DS has worse graphics but some games that may be more fun, a lot of gams us the touch screen for various things, but I like the PSP better although ppl will say its too similar to a PS2.

That was my EXACT question, that I even posted in these forums before I bought mine. The answer is an astounding YES! I think the game is actually BETTER is PSP format.
Jadaki
PSP isn't bad, but I wouldn't consider the movies a selling point unless you want to pay for a new format or to rip them to a memory card that doesn't really hold that much info. It really comes down to games you like between the DS and PSP, if your worried about future product support you might want a DS though, it outsells every other system (consoles, not just handhelds) in the world combined. It is the most popular gaming product in the world today.
CardWarfare
I bought mine today. Picked up Tony Hawk's Project 8 and GTA Liberty City Stories, but forgot to get the goddamned memory stick, and was too lazy to go back and get it.

This thing seriously rules though. Definately glad I got it.

Bonus- in a few days MLB The Show 2007 comes out.

The other reason I like a DS over PSP, everyone one of those games is available on the PS2, and thats where I would prefer to play them. The thing I like about DS games is they are for the most part unique to the handheld.

True, but PS2's are really cheap now, you can get one for 1/3rd the price of a PSP.

Please post in a month and let us know if you're still using it. When I first got mine it was the greatest thing ever too.
If the price ever gets anywhere near reasonable, it will be something I'd consider replacing.

I like my PSP, you get what you pay for etc. The DS may be a better buy for you though. Compare game libraries.
