I saw this movie 2 nights ago and I have to say, it was fantastic. The creatures were cool, the story engrossing, and the acting superb. It's in Spanish, so most of us need subtitles, but it's worth the watch, regardless. See it on the big screen if you can.
Oh and don't take your kids. It's set in 1944 in Spain and there are a number of very violent scenes involving the fascist military regime and Spanish rebels. The director didn't really hold back much in demonstrating the atrocities perpetrated by this fictional Spanish captain.

I watched it with French subtitles, and my Spanish and French are both so bad that I don't really know too well what was going on. If nothing else, it was pretty to look at. I'll watch it again with subtitles.

That movie was unbelievable. Best movie I've seen all year. Great plot, fantastic acting, and superb effects.
But yeah, that guy with the eyeballs in his hands was really weird. Of course, there were alot of weird things in that movie.

Thought it was wonderful.
Why did Pan bother to put his hands up to his face though when "looking"?
I loved the close-up of the Captain sewing his face and the whisky coming through the bandage. Sick!!
What the hell was that thing that she put under the bed that looked like a root/baby?

You can just borrow Harold's purple crayon.
Woot! First Harold and His Purple Crayon reference on FCP....it's gotta be, right?

It's been a really long time since I've read that. Fortunately, I work in a library that carries that title so I can brush up on my Harold knowledge.

I saw it last week also and thought it was terrific! Very subtle in some ways, very blatant in others. Certainly a form of condemnation of fascist regimes and, ultimately, a strong message that removing our freedoms only gives us greater cause to reach for them and that, in the end, freedom will inevitably be our own.
Also, anyone recognize the housekeeper? She was the lead woman in Y Tu Mama Tambien (Maribel Verdu). Excellente!

I'm pretty sure Pan was the guy with Horns. The guy with eyeballs in his hands was just some evil creature.
During the eyeball scene, I couldn't help but wonder shy she didn't just stab the guy with that huge knife.

The guy with the horns was just a faun who never mentioned his name... remember he said he had lots of names. I'm pretty sure I've read on a lot of websites that the eyeball guy is Pan. If I'm wrong though flame on.
And for the comment earlier about why he put his hands to his face.... you can see better when your eyes are up higher, if he had them down at his sides he'd have trouble seeing... duh

Pan is definitely the faun. The original Spanish title is El Laberinto del Fauno. The Pan reference in the English title is due to the fact that many people in North America wouldn't understand a vague faun reference and need a name to hang upon it.
The mix-up of which of the characters is Pan is due to the fact that the same actor plays BOTH the faun and the eyeball guy (Pale man)

That's what got me... I was looking at the credits and for the guy it said pan/pale man which made me think Pan was the pale man... but you are right I'm mistaken.

This is still my favorite movie of the year. It should easily win best foreign film, and possible a few of whatever else it's nominated for.

Iwo Jima wasn't nominated for Foreign Language Film. Of the 5 that were, Pans Laberynth is a shoe in. PL was also nominated for art deriction, Cinemetography, Music, and Writing (Original Screen Play).

I expected this to be much more about the fairy tale and less about the political setting.
Overall I found it sad which I didn't expect.
I also felt like the fact that it was subtitled took away from being able to actually watch the cinematography which should have been the best thing about it.
I was, ultimately, not really disappointed but not overjoyed with it either.

It was a nice change from all the same crap that keeps being remade. There is no originality any more, half of the movies made are remakes, this was original and unique.

I think Mercury wanted to know why you didn't like it since the majority of people who saw it liked it, although he could have worded it better.
