BLOCKBUSTER NEWS: Anderson Silva vs. Forrest Griffin at UFC 101

MMABay can EXCLUSIVELY reveal the blockbuster news that UFC middleweight champion, Anderson “The Spider” Silva will again step up to 205 pounds to take on former light heavyweight champion, Forrest Griffin at UFC 101 on August 8th.

MMABay has been informed of the bout by a source close to one of the two men but we are unable to reveal who it is at this time as they wish to remain anonymous.

The UFC have become disappointed with Silva lately after two lack lustre displays inside the octagon and they plan to “teach him a lesson” by matching him up with a man who always comes to fight, Forrest Griffin.

The UFC hope that by moving Silva back up to light heavyweight it will reignite the fire in him that saw him become the most dominant champion ever seen in the UFC without putting his 185 pound title at risk.

We were able to squash the rumour a week ago that Griffin’s original opponent, Thiago Silva, was injured and this is still the case. Instead the UFC have simply decided to switch Griffin’s opponent and that is why he has been preparing to face a southpaw over the past week at Xtreme Couture.

Silva vs. Griffin will now form part of one of the biggest cards of the year in Philadelphia on August 8th. Also on the card is 155 pound champion, B.J. Penn taking on number one contender, Kenny Florian in a fight fans have waited months to see.

By Michael Pepper.

Well that's an interesting fight....

Wow thats awesome. I dont know what to think on the outcome of that one. I want to say Silva because Griffin lacks KO power and world class BJJ but I wouldnt count him out.Good on both competitors for accepting that fight. Griffin always wants to fight the best but I am a little suprised Silva wants to go up against a top 5 LHW so soon. 101 is starting to rival 100 in star power and intriguing matches. So if Silva loses would a GSP/Silva match up lose some luster?

Now with Thiago Silva needing an opponent how about Shogun?

I would be more of a fan of Thiago Silva/Luiz Cane and Shogun/Jardine, although Shogun and Silva you can't go wrong.

The Anderson/Griffin fight is going to be awesome. In three rounds, Forrest has one hell of a chance. He'll for sure engage, and Griffin's chin may be the biggest factor here, but all I've heard about beating Anderson is getting inside/in the clinch and nullifying his range. However, Forrest is a big 205, so does this change an optimal game plan against Anderson? The opening line to this fight is going to be terribly interesting.

EDIT: Jardine vs. Thiago Silva at 102... leaves Shogun in limbo I guess...

Canseco admits needing money

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

Jose Canseco used his muscles to take pitchers deep and trade blows with Danny Bonaduce.

Now the former MVP will step onto the mat and try MMA.

In his latest attempt to cash in on his flagging post-baseball career, Canseco is set to make his mixed martial arts debut on May 26 in Japan. The former Oakland A's slugger and tell-all author is fighting South Korean Hong Man Choi on the Dream 9 card in Yokohama Arena.

Choi is a 7-foot-2, 330-pound super heavyweight and has a 1-2 record in MMA.

"I have no idea if I can do it," Canseco said Thursday night. "It's a tough sport."

Canseco has written two books, starred in a pair of reality shows, and had two celebrity boxing bouts since his 17-year baseball career ended. He boxed Bonaduce, a former "Partridge Family" child star, to a majority draw in a match in January. Canseco was listed at 6-4 and 260 pounds for that exhibition bout that featured only three, 1-minute rounds.

Canseco, who named names of alleged steroid abusers like himself in his two books, lost to former Philadelphia Eagle Vai Sikahema in his first foray into celebrity boxing.

Canseco's girlfriend, Heidi Northcott, said the MMA deal was presented to Canseco about two weeks ago. The 1988 AL MVP is part of a card that includes an eight-man open-weight tournament and is being called the Super Hulk Tournament.

By his acknowledgment, the baseball outcast needs the money. It's one reason why Canseco has accepted a wide variety of offbeat jobs to make ends meet.

That's the best you have? Go get some Taco Bell? You won't wait for my advice? Oh no, you hurt me. You cut me to my core. FWIW, I don't eat Taco Bell. If you were going for a fat joke, use the standard McDonald's joke please. I know you're oblivious to anything and everyone that doesn't huff your balls, so I'll give you a pass.

I won't even bother making the obligatory "how much is your advice going to cost" post, I'll just say that you don't even see how ridiculous your original post was, so there is no real sense in arguing with you. Common sense has left the building.

Now, if you all wait around, I'm going to post about something later on this week. Keep a look out for it.

UFC 98: Light Heavyweight
Sat 5/23 Rashad Evans vs Lyoto Machida
09:00 PM 401 Rashad Evans +176
402 Lyoto Machida -186

So here are my thoughts regarding this fight. Ron Mexico you are not allowed to listen.

This is a close fight imo.

Both fighters have gassed, this plays a pretty big factor.

Machida gassed in his fight against Ortiz. And Evans gasses all the time.

Even money I like Machida. Now I have to factor in the actual odds at hand.

Evans has the tools to win this fight, and Greg Jackson will put together an awesome game plan.

Machida should win this fight by decision. But because it's a title fight, you have to TAKE the belt from the current champ. This is what scares me about Machida's style.

I believe this fight is definitely going the distance. I think it would be a good idea to wait and see if the line evens out a bit.

All the waiting for that? A glorified 'idk' post?

I like Lyoto. You can say he gassed vs. Tito, but Tito pushes it like no one else, look at how Tito shoved Rashad around and basically won as the point deduction was on a take down that happened anyway. And Lyoto made Tito look silly. Never losing a round to anyone in the UFC, it's just too hard to pass him up at -175 (unless it changed). You mention something interesting in taking the belt from the champ, but Lyoto's style is to really not allow you to do anything. If he executes it, say like in a Tito/Soko/Thiago fight, I don't care who the judge is, when you can't hit him, he wins. And this could frustrate Rashad, and Lyoto is a lot more explosive than people give him credit for, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Lyoto end it, give such a dynamic guy 25 minutes, it's hard to guarantee a decision

Agreed that was a wicked punch right on the chin. Lyotto wont be the stationary target that Chuck was though. I did think the line would be a little closer though but I think Lyotto is a stud and will win. Might not be a good value line but I wanted to put some money on it and Lyotto is my choice.

Sorry that I didn't create a spectacular analaysis, lol.

I was super tired when I wrote that, and I'm tired now as well.

I'm a HUGE Machida fan. I've been behind him since his fight with Sok. And he has never lost for me.

I've lost twice now betting against Evans. Sigh.

I think Machida is one of, if not the smartest fighters in the UFC.

I also think that Greg Jackson is the smartest cornerman.

So it will be an interesting dynamic.

I'm almost certainly going to take Machida in this. I was hoping that someone could create a solid arguement for Evans......

It really is an intriguing match up. Rashad is very underrated even now. I also am curious how Rashad and Jackson gameplan Machida. Does he try and stand up and hope that his quick hands are to much for Machida' ilussiveness, or does he go back to his wrestling background and try to take it to the ground? If I really annalysed the fight and not bet with my heart I probally could see value in Rashad at +150 considering of the 2 he is the one with one punch power to go along with his other tools. I probally was too hasty in jumping on Machida as soon as the line was realeased.
ford14
I've done a really poor job at keeping up with the discussion in this thread.

Anyway, seems nearly everyone is favoring Machida, and I guess I agree. Rashad has started very slow his past couple fights, even though he came back and won them. Forrest was basically picking him apart, and I see the Machida fight going a lot like the first couple rounds of that fight. The only difference will be that Machida has much more power in his hands than Forrest does, and his accuracy is better as well. Both fighters have had this stigma of not finishing fights in the past, but I don't see how that applies to either at this point. Machida put the beatdown on and then submitted Soko, absolutely destroyed Silva, and had Tito in really bad shape a couple times...Evans KO'd Salmon, Liddell, and Griffin, all in pretty spectacular fashion. Plus, Machida has pretty much admitted to fighting just to win in the past, and now says his goal is to decimate people. Ever since he made that remark, he's been pretty true to his word.

The only thing Rashad has going for him is his hand speed, which is scary fast. Judging by the last couple fights, I think Machida will probably be the aggressor, maybe not so much in the volume of strikes, but in closing the gap and initiating the action. Usually that falls right into Rashad's gameplan, but Machida just doesn't get hit by anything flush, like ever, so once Evans fails to connect on some counter shots, he'll get frustrated and give Machida opportunities.

My pick, Machida TKO (4).

Also, Serra is doing a video blog for 98.

Pretty disappointed I lost the Okami vs. Miller line, I liked Okami a lot there.

What about Hughes/Serra? I got on Hughes early at -215, and wondering if there is still value -270... sure Hughes isn't at Alves/GSP level, but come on... Matt Serra? When he beat GSP I pretty much thought there would be value betting against Serra for 2 or 3 fights.
grocery_mony
Hughes looked terrible in his last 2 fight(admittadly against the top 2 guys in the division) and hasnt fought in over a year. I would stick to what ever you have on him at -210. Wrestling is ussually the last skill in mma to deteriorate but if his reaction times are a little slower he could get caught with something.

Went to the Strikeforce press conference today, announced Arlovski vs. Rogers. Hell of a card now.

MAIN CARD

* Robbie Lawler vs. Jake Shields
* Nick Diaz vs. Scott Smith
* Kevin Randleman vs. Mike Whitehead
* Phil Baroni vs. Joe Riggs
* Andrei Arlovski vs. Brett Rogers

PRELIMINARY CARD

* Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante vs. Jared Hamman
* Josh Bumgarner vs. Jesse Finney
* Tyron Woodley vs. Sal Woods
* Lucas Lopes vs. Scott Ventimiglia
* Pat Benson vs. Dave Cochran
* Booker DeRousse vs. James Wade

Some enjoyable quotes of the day.

Baroni: "I'm not going to thank anyone for me being here. If you're a promotion, and you get me to fight, you're ****in lucky. You're welcome, Strikeforce."

"What's my gameplan? Punch him in the ****ing face. A lot. That's always my gameplan."

After a pause in media questions, they open it up to the public. Randleman encourages fans to ask questions they always wondered. Baroni replies:
"I'll start. I'm Phil Baroni, I'm a pro fighter, I wear red underwear, and I like long walks on the beach."

Randleman was out of control. He came out yelling and screaming and the 50 people there were laughing uncontrollably. Whitehead said you have to deal with a guy like Randleman talking shit, all of a sudden Randleman jumps out of his seat and screams at the top of his lungs saying "YEAH! LET'S DO IT!" to a comical laugh from everyone, he seemed to be roid raging for an entire hour.

Baroni said "I'm going to knock Riggs out. I talked to my ****ing agent, the moron, and told him to get me a south paw. He didn't know what the **** I was talking about like 'What's a southpaw?' He fell right into this Riggs fight, I crush south paws, look at Yuki Kondo, they eat straight rights and I have the best one around."
