I'm new posting here and although I've been checking out this forum for quite a while now and writing articles about Daniel and the poker industry on my blog and other poker news sites, this incredible story of Outrageous Injustice made me think maybe Daniel could help bring this story to more people by posting about it on his blog. I see you have a little time off now and also noticed you don't mind posting about important non-poker topics.
Let me start out by saying I think DN is probably the hardest working poker player on the pro circuit and really enjoy reading his blog and watching the video blog. It's amazing to me to see how many other "top pros" don't even update their site for months and in some cases even years. Great job Daniel! Hopefully you can help bring this injustice to more people through your writing and maybe it will help.
I was alerted to this story by Mark Cuban (owner of the Dallas Mavs) on his blog Blog Maverick. Here is the post about Genarlow Wilson from Mark Cuban. In short this is what Mark Cuban said in his post... "For those who don't know. Genarlow Wilson was sentenced to 10 years in jail for doing something every 17 year old I knew, including me, tried to do. He is two years into this nightmare that only makes the State of Georgia a posterchild for mistrust in government."
This story starts with a young man who was 17 years old and had a very bright future. That bright future changed in the blink of an eye.
Once, Genarlow was the homecoming king at Douglas County High, had a 3.2 GPA and even guarded next years potential #1 NFL draft pick in Calvin Johnson. Now he's Georgia inmate No. 1187055, convicted of aggravated child molestation.
When he was a senior in high school, he received oral sex from a 10th grader. He was 17. She was 15. Everyone, including the girl and the prosecution, agreed she initiated the act. But because of an archaic Georgia law, it was a misdemeanor for teenagers less than three years apart to have sexual intercourse, but a felony for the same kids to have oral sex.
Intead of going into the whole case, I posted more about the case, links to the ESPN story and also video from ABC news and CNN about the case on my news blog. Here is the direct link to the Help Free Genarlow Wilson post. I also posted what we as bloggers and site owners can do to help this young man. Once you read the ESPN story I'd love to hear your comments and hopefully you (Daniel Negreanu) might also post your thoughts on this on your blog.
Let me finish by saying this... I realize Genarlow put himself in a bad position by even being in that hotel room, but as any of us who went through high school and prom can tell you... this is going on all the time and the punishment most definitely does not fit the so-called crime. If it did... there'd be millions of us in prison for getting a BJ from our girlfriend who was a sophmore when we were a senior.
I just ask that you take a look at it and if this disgusts you as it has millions of others, please do something about it. Write on your blogs about it, contact your local media or even help Genarlow through contributing on the website WilsonAppeal.com put up by his attorneys and family.
