Hero?

Easy fold, I know. I really wanted to call though, and I think this will be 56 or 89 a reasonable proportion of the time. Anyone see some merit in the wondercall? Very early, no reads.

i say easy fold also. but i'm curious to know what he was doing this with. is it possible he was pushing on air because you showed weakness checking behind on the turn to represent you failed to take down the pot with your continuation bet?

Easy fold of course, but let's think about a different hand. Let's say instead of 22, you have say 99. This makes it closer, right?

To me, in a situation like this, when it's early, I have the mantra of "It's early, I might be ahead here, but I feel I'm better than most of the rest of the table and as such there will be better opportunities to make money later in the tourney when we have reads." I know that might be too conservative for some, but I think it works.

That said, last night I called all the way down with 2nd pair on the flop on a 3 diamond board because I had a great read on a guy I play live with all the time. He had AK (whiffed the board) and it was obvious. So I'm not opposed to making heroic calls if you have good reads, but not here...

56 or 89? OOP with a standard raise in a shortstacked tournament ? I need to go back to Full Tilt apparently.

I can see being ahead of some Aces here, but I think hes probably got the Q.

I folded, but I wasn't sure I believed him. I think it is more likely he had the ten than the queen though.

I say 56 or 89 are easily possible because of hands like this:

Stack sizes:
UTG: t1545
UTG+1: t1350
MP1: t1635
MP2: t1830
MP3: t1455
CO: t1365
Button: t1095
SB: t1230
Hero: t1995

Pre-flop: (9 players) Hero is BB with Q icon_suit_spade.gif 9 icon_suit_heart.gif
6 folds, Button raises to t60, SB folds, Hero calls t30 (pot was t105).

Flop: 6 icon_suit_diamond.gif 9 icon_suit_club.gif 5 icon_suit_heart.gif (t135, 2 players)
Hero bets t90, Button calls t90 (pot was t225).

Turn: 2 icon_suit_heart.gif (t315, 2 players)
Hero bets t180, Button calls t180 (pot was t495).

River: 8 icon_suit_diamond.gif (t675, 2 players)
Hero checks, Button checks.

Results:
Final pot: t675
Hero showed Q icon_suit_spade.gif 9 icon_suit_heart.gif
Button mucks T icon_suit_diamond.gif Q icon_suit_heart.gif

thats a helluva lot better than 56 or 89. Hes stealing from the button with QT, standard. Two overs calling the flop, not horrible if he thinks he can see the river card for free. He loses his mind at the turn, but at least he didnt lose it preflop
