Full Version: Playing For Profit

Hi there forum, first post and hopefully Daniel or any member reads this and gives me his/her comments.
I play here in Ireland with a group of players, 2 other guys in particular. We all do well (ish) . 1 being a good winner online, 1 a very strong bricks n mortar cash table player and me being the tournament expert (sorta). We cash often and then spend it etc.... I would call ourselves break even players... After listening to thousands of podcasts, watching thousands of hours of tv poker, reading thousands of poker words i fell that between the three of us that we can make thousands (long-term).
What we are doing is making a bankroll of 3,900 (1,300 each) to draw from for our poker needs for exactly one year. Our goal after one year is to make this into 20,000.
Basically this is our bankroll and all 3 of us can pull any amount from it for our perspective game to try and maximise.
I find it will do 3 things.
1. You are not using weekly wage (bills n food) money to play poker
2. Better focus. You are more relaxed and mentally ready at the poker table as you are playing not just for ureself but for the team.
3. You will improve your game because you are better focused plus the bankroll will allow you to play in higher stakes and against better players....

I also think it is a good return if you are winning. If i am at home and have family comittments over a week i know that at least one of the guys are playing to try and win... so its like a continous profit if we are winning.
Obviously there is a lot of trust involved and most of all we made it clear from the outset, any withdrawals of over 100 has to be approved by the 2 other players, if not there will be no argument. I f i went out next week and lost 1,300, this is taken as part of the risk equalisation that we have undertaken and i still am able to access the rest of the money for the rest of the year. Basically we are in it together and maybe after 1 year we will do it again if its profitable and then we will play bigger tourneys with bigger payouts or even plan a trip to vegas for the 3 of us etc.....

I would love to hear ppls views on this particularly any one that has tried something similar...

Thanks,

Pat...

ps: Daniel, what number razor did that beautiful hairdresser use on you????? we have a small side bet
11 to 1

Did you ever read Super System? The original (don't know what's in the SS2) but this is what Doyle Brunson and friends, and a lot of players have done for decades. Though, they would go to the games together and then split the proceeds. That way, if one had a big night and another was off, they each had some protection. Sounds like you have a new twist on it. I'd be sure the group had a cash-out policy, like, an amount of time - say a year - you will be doing this and then splitting the year's profit. If any!

I wouldn't recommend it because of arguements and fall-outs. One guy could just leave with the entire bankroll or lose it in one day.

It's a good idea if you are all disciplined players

but more importantly, where abouts in Ireland are you from? And what kind of tournies do you play?

I hear in the uk there are a group of pro poker players who also play and combine funds for each other see www.thehendonmob.com

so you are currently break even players looking forward to a bigger bankroll so that you can play against better players ?
And you want to make money?

sounds good.

That's pretty much what I got out of it.

What happens if one player has an awesome year and earns 75%-80% of the earnings. Is that player going to want to split it all three ways? Would that even be fair? I personally wouldn't be comfortable sharing a bankroll with anybody.

Good luck with whatever you guys decide.

Did you mean to say that you spend your profits so you never get to build up your bankrolls or are you all really just breaking even ?

I think I would rather play on my own $1300 for the year, but good luck to all of you.

Over under on how long it takes them to bust?
