hah, and yet it was stickied already...so in my eyes, it makes it official anyway.
On another note, I've never watched an episode of Rome but I've heard good things. Is it really that good?

If you like any of HBO's other 1 hour drama's you should like it. It's not as much about the main characters you read about in history class as it is about two roman solders who become unlikely friends. The rest of the cast is there, but they provide an interesting backdrop and the political intrigue while the more human side of the story is shown through Pullo and Vorenus. The rise of Octavian after the death of Ceaser should be good though.

Interesting what they're going to do with Vorenus now that his wife and kids are dead.
I think they could take the character pretty much anywhere from here.

Can't say that this episode was inappropriately titled. The whole redemption or self destruction of Vorenus is quite the story. Octavian taking a stand vs Marc Antony and his mother was interesting too...
Then of course, the teaser of Vorenus's children still being alive makes you wonder how they will factor into things in the future.

very much a setting-the-table episode for how things will unravel this season.
Octavian vs. Antony... Does Antony use Cleopatra and his son in has battle vs. Octavian? Remember, Antony and Cleopatra is one of the great love stories of all time...
I like vorenus as a bloodthirsty criminal.

One of the things I am slightly disappointed in is that Max Pirkus who plays Octavian is being replaced by Simon Woods once he comes back from the war. I understand why they are doing it, I just really like the job Pirkus did in the role.
I also think there was a bit of interesting foreshadowing going in when Pullo tells Vorenus that he doesn't want to be around to see what happens when he pisses off the gods, considering his kids are alive seeing them die would be a harsh punishment.

1. Why are they changing actors?
2. I see where this is going...he finds out his family is alive, gets back on the road of the good and righteous and ends up the hero... They won't go anywhere different, it'll just be a fun ride while it getst there.

I think this weeks episode now ranks as my second favorite of the series. The only one I remember liking more is the first season when Vorenus saves Pullo in the arena fighting by slaughtering a bunch of gladiators and carrying his injured friend to safety.

What i love about this show is how quickly they move things along....from antony/octivian union to the defeat of brutus/cassius in greece...plus a great sex scene with Octavia....Now that's a great episode.

Tuesday, February 20th, 2007, 8:43 AM
I thought it was odd they tried to make Brutus look like a hero in his death scene (also mirroring the death of Julius Ceaser), considering in reality he committed suicide.
jeff_536
Tuesday, February 20th, 2007, 10:12 AM
Well...one might consider that a suicide, attacking a couple thousand men with only a big sword and no armour.
I think the writers were going too hard for the redemption thing, his bathing in the river a couple weeks back to be reborn and then this new courageous streak. A lot of literary licence, i think. The also turned Cicero from a whimpering pus.sy to a man who put the good of the republic before his own life.
Things should be interesting next week, get back to the politics of running Rome...

So good, so sad that next week is the end.
Octavian owned everyone...
Pullo killing left and right made me warm and tingly...
I wonder how they are going to end the series, as much as all the political intrigue is great it really is the story of Vorenus and Pullo.

If I recall my history correctly, Octavian defeats Antony & Cleopatra in a big sea battle, so I assume that and Cleopatra's subsequent suicide ends that story line and Octavian returns to Rome and takes on the name Caesar Augustus.
I'm guessing Pullo signs on with Octavian and somehow meets up with Vorenus after that battle ends, both of them wounded, yadda yadda. But that may be too much of a happy ending for the series. Maybe they kill each other in the battle, but since the actual battle was between huge trireme galleys, its sort of hard to envision how they'd work that in.
Jadaki
Monday, March 12th, 2007, 7:16 AM
Yea, I somehow expect Vorenus to meet Pullo in battle and somehow kill each other and then realize what they did and give each other a final hug and they die in each others arms.

I'm glad they are ending it now, anyway. The Varienus and Pullo storyline was already getting stretched to the far bounds of believability. Don't get me wrong, I like that characters, but i mean, their plot line has just been all over the map, from a soldier to a magistrate to a gladiator to a sentator to a crime lord.. another season or two, and it would just get nuts as the run out of material for them. Plus, all the historically juicy stuff is about to taper off. This is a good place to end. I can't wait to see what HBO does next.
If Verinus is Hades, than Pullo is fcking Mars... so brutal

Preacher and A Song of Ice and Fire are the two largest properties they have snatched up, the guy who created Deadwood is also working on a new series about surfers (fu
ck him for that, Deadwood was awesome), so HBO should have some killer stuff in the pipeline.

I'm betting next week that Pullo gets ordered to kill Cesarian (ironically it's his son) and Vorenus is charged with defending him... this is gonna end badly.
And the guy who plays Pullo needs a Emmy.

I especially liked the part where Vorenus is playing ball with Caesarion, and gets asked "tell me about my father" and its obvious that while Caesarion is repeating things he heard about Caesar, Vorenus is describing Pullo.

I dunno if I would call it unsatisfying.
Vorenus was able to reconcile with his children, maybe too late but at least it happened.
Pullo has the son that he wanted.
Atia got what she wanted all along, but realized that the price was too high.
Wasn't a happy ending, but it wasn't entirely sad either.
HBO has ended some shows on a better note and some worse, I'm just sorry that it's the end of one of the best shows ever made.

by unsatisfying I meant that the story arc could easily have continued on. I feel unsatisfied with the relationship Atia will have with Octavian now that Anthony is gone and Octavian is the ruler. What will happen to Caesarian and how will Pullo raise him? Will Octavia ever find true happiness and how does she really feel raising Anthony's children with Cleopatra?
that is what is so unsatisfying. Also, I was not very happy with how Vorenus died. I would much rather have seen him killed in some epic battle than stabbed in the back by some lackey...
I am really going to miss this show
