That's an interesting question, serge.... it's kind of hard to explain, but here goes... there is NOTHING written down about this theory, but this is how I see it: The Lady Byng seems to go to a superstar with low PIM's, regardless of his points. In the past, the winners all are name players: Gretzky, Hull, Kariya, Mogilny, Sakic, etc.
Last year Richards won it (for '04) with 70 points, in a Stanley Cup season for his team. SO maybe this means a change in thinking. As to your direct question, yes, if Wellwood had 80-90 points with low or no PIM's he absolutely SHOULD be a candidate, and should probably win it? Would he? I don't think so. Not because he didn't deserve it, but because of ... surprise... old school thinking in the NHL.
