I posted this in the Books forum also, but obv nobody reads that and it applies to LHE, so I thought y'all might be interested.

I just got this from Amazon today, and I've started reading it. It seems pretty elementary so far, but it does have some interesting material on bankroll management that I think beginner's at least could benefit from. It's written as a series of hand examples, and while I don't think it's the new SSHE, it does feel like it has the potential to be beneficial as they get into some more advanced play. If nothing else, I think it will probably serve to enforce some of the concepts I've already learned.

I'll edit this with a fuller review when I've finished the book if anyone is interested.

I think it's called "Million Dollar Hold'em" or something like that. Don't have it in front of me this second. If you search Johnny Chan on Amazon, it should be like the first hit. Just came out Nov 28th.

Seems like Chan is a funny guy to write a LHE strat book. Based on player profiles I've read (from DN and Barry G) he's a master at NLHE and PLO, but his LHE game is lacking. Below is DN's profile of him:

Cash Game Accomplishments:

Johnny plays as high as the sky against the best players in the world. For years he was a fixture in the "Larry game," playing Stud with Larry Flynt and co. at the Hustler in California.
Johnny now plays in the big game at Bellagio as well and is a winning player.

Best game: No Limit Hold'em- He also plays a mean game of pot limit Omaha, but there is no question about it, Johnny's best game is no limit hold'em. He is arguably the best no limit player who ever lived, and his accomplishments at the WSOP over the years are unparalelled.

Worst Game: Limit Hold'em- Strangely, despite his profieciency in no limit, limit hold'em doesn't suit Johnny style quite as well. Johnny is a trapping type of player and that approach is ideal for no limit, but a little weak in a game like limit hold'em where it's important to be much more aggressive on the flop.
He doesn't suck at it obviously, but he would be an underdog against players like Jennifer Harman, Todd Brunson, or Phil Ivey in limit hold'em.

Strengths: Players often talk about seeing through a players soul, but Johnny's ability to recognize tells might just be the bet in the business. If he looks at your eyes, your fingers, your throat, or your body language in general... he will know. This is a strength that should be respected and feared. If you take him lightly, he will crush you.

Weaknesses: Johnny is a no limit and/or pot limit genius, but what makes him strong in those game hurts him a little bit in the limit games. He has a cautious approach to limit poker that costs him a little bit of value in certain situations.

Cash Games: 7.5
Tournaments: 10
Emotional Stability: 6
Heart: 9
Short Handed: 6.5
Ring Game: 8
No Limit Hold'em: 10

I knew Chan sucked at LHE when he folded to Mike McDermott getting 3,783:1. wink.gif

Who all has or is ordering this? There are enough people here that we could probalby get a decent study group going on here to discuss concepts and applications

I may check out that Mathematics of Poker book. There are so many books I feel I should read that I often have trouble getting into them though. I picked up the Chan book b/c it covers my main game (LHE) and I felt it might be able to help me.

I'm about 2/3 of the way through the Johnny Chan book right now and I have to say I'm not all that impressed. I want to finish the book, then try to organize my thoughts and write a full review of it, but as of right now I feel there's some stuff in there that may just be flat out bad advice. In particular, there are a lot of spots where he smooth calls raises before the flop with big hands instead of 3-betting. It certainly pushes a more post-flop style as opposed to one where you always bet your hands pre-flop according to their value. I think Sklansky would have a heart attack if he read this book.

That said, I think there is probably some good advice on postflop play and it's probably going to end up being worth the read. It's a very easy read, there's no math involved and it's all example hands, so it reads pretty quickly and smoothly. I'll post a full review within the next week.
