I vote that an AHL Road Hockey Tournament be conducted during draft day next year. I think this would be absolutely hilarious, especially if teams were comprised of divisions (i.e. 4 teams, Eddie Shack East/West, and Tiger Williams North/South).
I can picture it now...
"Serge, Daniel, and Dale break out on a 3 on 0 with Nate in net"
"Daniel does a spin move and drops it laterally to Dale, moving Nate out of position. Dale then fakes the shot, drawing Nate even further out of position, and passes it to Serge who's standing at the side of the net."
"Serge draws his stick back for the easy tap-in, but then sees a guy walking down the street who looks a bit like Kyle Wellwood, loses his concentration, and misses by four feet."
"Nate picks up the puck and outlets to Bob, who, while doing server maintenance on FCP, pulls a Savardian-Spinerama and drills one top shelf".
Daniel, Darryl, and Dale (the 3D line) scream at Serge who refuses to accept responsibility. He then annoints himself first star (of the game and AHL) and promptly re-signs himself to a $14.50 contract for 4 years saying "you don't understand my strategy".

That's actually a legitimately good idea! We have 4 teams of 5 and we do it by division. It would be interesting to see who the favorite would be. My team would suck, but it would be fun anyway.

Wouldn't you just hemmorhage at the sight of serge screaming at Wellwood for not passing him the ball???????

How? Are you a goalie or are we sticking Serge in there? I can play, but there are other teams that would be stronger.
Some guys on other teams wouldn't play because they don't exercise, but I wonder if they'd play if their was a prize package for the winners? Hmmm...

That's good, then I can score some goals with a break on the blueline everynow and then to fend off the heart attack.
It would be awesome if we could get a sheet of ice for a hour or so, but I'm not sure how many of us can skate/play.

I seriously think we should do this. There are two ways we could do it:
Tiger Williams Conference vs. Eddie Shack Conference
We could each have a full lineup with 5 players and a goalie. The bench would depend on how many players show up. The captain for each team would be the team that represented the conference in the finals and they would decide who plays where, and when a shift is necessary.
We could play up to 10. First team to score 10 goals wins. I think ball hockey makes the most sense as it's much easier to do. We could rent out a school gym or something like that.
All Divisions play each other:
East vs. West and South vs. North. Play till 5 and winning team advances. A team must have at least three players show up. 4 on 4 with one sub. The two teams that win play off for the championship in the same format. We could make up a trophy and everything.
PLUS: The winning team would win an all expenses paid trip to Las Vegas on the last weekend of the AHL season. Anyone else who wanted to come would have to pay their own way.
Gruven will ref the game and any penalty would result in 2 minutes in the box.

There's a couple of good places in pickering that have indoor ball hockey set-ups which we could rent, I've played at a few before - they'd be full sized rinks. The day after the draft would probably make it more interesting, as it would:
i) increase smack-talking (I'm officialy number 5 on Serge's hit list, I don't think it would be difficult to move up a spot or two).
ii) give everyone a chance to look over their completed roster after draft day, and then discuss trades etc. the next days (maybe not everybody's a trade whore like I am, but whatever).

We could try it for the first year and see how lopsided it turns out. Our division is weaker in the fantasy pool too but that doesn't stop us from trying? Are the other divisions any more out of shape than you?
Also, we could level things out after year one by adjusting the score. The top team would spot team #2 1 goal up to 10 and spot teams #3 and #4 3 goals up to 10.
In essense, it would be like a pool spot.
Top Team 0
Runner up 1
#3 #4 3
We could adjust that number each year depending on who finished where.

The more I think about it, and how out of shape some of us are, I think the best option is Williams vs Shack. That way each team could have a maximum of 10 players that would shift in an out. Realistically I think we'd get about 12-14 owners to play which is good for 5 on 5 with a goalie and a couple subs.

That would allow you to play a more realistic length game, say 3 20 minute periods running time. Otherwise, if you wanted to include everyone, play 4 on 4, with 20 minute games, round robin format, with a championship game that was two 20 minute periods, last two minutes stop time. In that type of game, penalties would be 2 minutes running time, OR you could go with the accumulated penalties, with penalty shots for the difference.... lots of different options.

Is anything happening with either of these? I think the road hockey would be a lot more interesting than paintball, given it being a hockey pool and all, and it wouldn't be that hard to organize. They have an indoor place in pickering with two indoor rinks side by side, we could rent it fairly cheaply, probably $10 each or so, and have the tourney run an hour and a half or something.
If gruven's offer still stands we'd have a ref/ringer. Do it at the end of the day, that way people can talk trades etc. once all the drafting is through. Good/bad idea?
