simo_8ball
9 pentation 9.

It could easily be larger though (replace pent with hex/oct/etc.)

Alternatively I could say 9 and have the mathematical operator for a 'busy beaver' number - BB().

BB(9) is quite big, if anyone could calculate it.

You sicken me...

I thought a fifth meant no more than five hours for someone. And when I put away two, I am an alcoholic. Five 1/5ths in 5 hours = 1, i mean 5 = wrongs equal a right.

Right?

There are 4 women who want to walk across a bridge. They all begin on the same side. You have 17 minutes to get all of them across to the other side. It is night. There is one flashlight. A maximum of two people can walk across at one time. Any party who crosses, either 1 or 2 people, must have the flashlight with them. The flashlight must be walked back and forth, it cannot be thrown, etc. Each woman walks at a different speed. A pair must walk together at the rate of the slower woman's pace.
Woman 1: 1 minute to cross
Woman 2: 2 minutes to cross
Woman 3: 5 minutes to cross
Woman 4: 10 minutes to cross
For example if Woman 1 and Woman 4 walk across first, 10 minutes have elapsed when they get to the other side of the bridge. If Woman 4 then returns with the flashlight, a total of 20 minutes have passed and you have failed the mission. What is the order required to get all women across in 17 minutes?

I loved Quirks & Quarks.

This isn't really a riddle, but IIRC, the creamed coffee reaches drinkability quicker but the black coffee gets to room temp first. Insulative properties of cream, and slowed convection rates.

You are incorrect. The reason is he wanted to make sure his wife in America was ok, so he called from the Hotel Phone. But he didn't want to be charged for long distance, so he hung up once he heard her pick up and realized she was ok. You don't get charged if the call is less than three seconds.

reason for this is Newton's law of cooling

this one is simple, we need more of these ppl!

Without any measuring implements and without removing any wine from the barrel, how can they easily determine who is correct?

Nah, Newton only explains the slowing rate of cooling. The creamed coffee has to cool at a different rate/be somehow insulative to stay warmer longer WRT room temp. The standard newton prob is whether to add the cream now or later if you want your coffee hot (but not scalding) when your meal arrives.

tip it until the wine reaches the lip - if it is above the 'high-end' of the base, it is more than 1/2 full, if below, less than.

The standard newton prob is whether to add the cream now or later if you want your coffee hot (but not scalding) when your meal arrives.I have a book with a diffrent version as I described

The point I was making is that the a hot cup of coffee cools at a faster rate than one colder than it according to NLOC.

I think you're trying to say the cream would change the properties of the coffee, giving it diffrent coeficients in NLOC, this is true but the cup of coffee that is coolder and has cream will cool slower because of the temperature difference not the cream's properties.

Instead of cream imagine cold coffee being added to the coffee, the same reasoning would apply except the coeficients in NLOC would not change.

You are given a set of scales and 12 marbles. The scales are of the old balance variety. That is, a small dish hangs from each end of a rod that is balanced in the middle. The device enables you to conclude either that the contents of the dishes weigh the same or that the dish that falls lower has heavier contents than the other.
The 12 marbles appear to be identical. In fact, 11 of them are identical, and one is of a different weight. Your task is to identify the unusual marble and discard it. You are allowed to use the scales three times if you wish, but no more.

Note that the unusual marble may be heavier or lighter than the others. You are asked to both identify it and determine whether it is heavy or light.

put 6 marbles on each side of the scale.

when one side drops, take those 6 marbles, and get rid of the other 6. put 3 on each side

when on side drops remove the other 3 marbles.

Choose any 2 of the marbles. If you wiehg the 2 and one of them drops, that is the heavy one. If neither scale ide drops, the one NOT on the scale is the heavy one
