Full Version: Just Figured Out The Biggest Leak In My Game

After being the bubble boy in 2 satellites to the sunday million (finishing 4th and 3rd where 2 get tickets), I finally figured out the biggest leak in my game.

I lack patience when it matters the most.

Deep in MTT's, during the bubble in SNG's, when I get down in cash games... I always find myself forcing the action and trying to do too much. Trying to accumulate a huge chipstack instead of just playing smart and moving up, trying to push people off of hands that I know they aren't going to fold, etc, etc...

Which then leads to most of the time, me failing and losing out on money.

I need to figure out a way to stop doing this, but I don't know where to begin. I believe I may have A.D.D. and that may be the one big reason behind this, so maybe I should go get that checked out.

Or maybe I should start smoking some ganja like the rest of the MTT pro's on these forums, that seems to work best...

put a stickynote on ur wall to remind yourself

or try to focus on each hand. Analyzing whether it's correct to push here or fold. Don't force the action

Just by realizing this, you've made a huge leap forward. Now just try and remember it while you are playing.

i recommend ganja. also, as someone else said, the fact that you've realized this will be a big help.

as far as tournaments go, maybe do some re-reading about when you should be getting more aggressive and what situations are good to bluff or semibluff. remember that until late stages of tournaments, bluffing to win chips is a bonus, not a requirement; as in, seize the good oppurtunities but dont try to create others. also, leave yourself outs!

and about cash games, dont, ddoonntt, DONT ever change your game because of session goals. this means dont leave a game that you are killing because you are happy with what you are made and dont want to risk your winnings. this also means dont gamble it up when you're down because you're only setting yourself for more anger/frustration/tilt.

having session goals (or trying to end it "up") makes about as much sense as having goals for each individual hand. because in the grand scheme of it all, each hand is just part of each session, and each session is just part of the longass game that is your career. you will have "unlucky" sessions just like you'll have "unlucky" hands. it's all about the long run.

I've had the same problem for quite some time, still can't figure out what to do about it. Playing more tables or watching TV does help though.

You've figured out what your leak is. Thats a huge step in the right direction, I would suggest remembering that's what you need to work on especially when you get down in a cash game and are trying to grind back up. As far as bubble's go, attack when you think they're weak and dont be afraid to lay it down if all you're looking for is a qualifier / bubble money.

If you are able to identify the tight players on the bubble, then this isn't necessarily a problem anyway.

But you need to try to use your aggression selectively, because most players tighten up a lot around bubble time. So, especially if you have built up a big chip stack, you can bully.

But, you can't bully the short stacks too much, which a lot of people think you can. On the contrary, it is they who are just waiting for a big hand to play, and nothing else.

It is the medium stacks, who are safe, who can be pushed around a little, because they don't want/need to get involved.

I've been driven insane before when I've been on tables, on the bubble, with a big stack who is prepared to play super agressively. Because I, and most of the other medium stacks are just waiting for one of the short stacks to be knocked out. They take advantage of the situation, and can get to the FT with a huge chip lead, largely because of their bubble play.

So... basically, if used correctly with (and against) certain chip stacks, it doesn't have to be all negative.

Also, it depends on how important just cashing is to you, or are you playing for the win - this is where a lot of people's opinions on this subject vary.
