Full Version: So I Have A Radiator

New apartment and I have one of these.

I just turned it on for the first time for the year and is making all sorts of hissing and steaming noise as well as smelling like burning plastic (I know there is nothing near it that is melting). Is it just something that happens when it is turned on for the first time every year?

Should I call someone or waiting it out I don't have any experience with any of these

They sometimes make a lot of noise, especially if they haven't been used in awhile, so don't worry at all about that. If it smells like burning plastic though, that's not normal.

I had one of these in my apartment in college. It would stop working completely, and I had supress this little notch on the bottom where the pipe is which would release water while you held it down. And every so often I had to empty out like a gallon of water from it before it would work again. I have no idea why that is or if it will ever apply to you. But it just gave me a bad flashback of freezing my ass off.

Word on the street is true. I gotta finish my college degree.....

Speaking of Boston, you know anybody who wants to give me a job?

i think the burning plastic smell is normal if it hasn't been used in a while-because of the dust that has collected

everything you are encoutering with the radiator is all normal when you first turn it on. dont worry it wont explode. but the boiler that is in the basement might.
