Okay, I'm willing to give you that Kerry's apparent jab at the troops was nothing more than a botched joke.

But, what was the joke supposed to be? I'm really confused by this..

"You know what happens if you become intellectually lazy..? You end up invading Iraq."

Is that what it was supposed to be? That's about the only mildly comical way I could see it having been intended. Someone clear it up for me, please, if I'm mistaken.

Oh, and there's plenty of topics floating around to discuss politics; I'm discussing humor.

Perhaps it was a jab at Bush's intelligence.

Except that Bush isn't in Iraq. Thus, if that was the case, it wasn't funny.

It was supposed to be a shot at the president, but I am curious what the joke was going to be as well..

I heard the soundbyte on the radio this morning..and when he said the line the people around him actually laughed. Maybe they get it and I don't...

Even if it was a shot at the President, I'm still struggling to connect the dots as to how that's some kind of burn on him. Is that like a Kowboy Koop joke?

Not literally, but he called for the invasion of Iraq; thus, the intellectually lazy jump at the chance to invade Iraq instead of logically reasoning why not to invade Iraq.

no the joke is that if you are dumb and don't study a situation you wind up making horrible decisions like invading iraq and winding up with a quagmire where tons of people die every day

That might be the worst joke I've ever heard, then.

Or maybe, I guess that it's possible I'm so dumb, I should be in Iraq?

Ease up the horses. This isn't a political debate. Take what Kerry said, adjust a few words, and turn it into a joke...and please don't make it something like "If you don't go to school and get an education.....BUSH IS STOOPID"

Actually.. I still don't really get how that's supposed to be funny. I can see it as a statement of an opinion. "If you end up intellectually lazy, you'll end up walking us into what I believe was an unnecessary war."

I don't see how that's going to bring the house down, really. But, hey, I've never had much of a sense of humor.

I personally would've gone somewhere along the lines of.. "You know what happens when you don't study? And you party all the time? Plod along all day and get a C average? Well, if you're lucky, Dad will buy you a pro baseball team, your brother will toss his weight around and you'll end up running this country into the ground some day.. But, for most of you.... "

I'm a Republican and I could see the humor in that.

Oh, and Alan/Keith, if this becomes another bunch of bickering and verbal jousting about Iraq/Bush, please lock it. Thanks.

Basically, from where I'm standing (that guy in the football stands that looks confusingly at the screen until he notices it's actually him on the big screen), it's just another knee shot to the crotch of the pubby party from another holier than thou libby. You know the type I'm sure; the cool kid in high school who doesn't actually do anything except mock everyone else. Maybe it wasn't meant so much to be funny primarily but more insulting in a tongue in cheek way, which makes it more pathetic than anything.

That's what it seems like to me, but, I really have a hard time believing John "Swiftboat" Kerry would really mock our soldiers. He might've been a grass-smoking hippy, but, I don't think he's a communist.

That's why I'm honestly trying to figure out what he thought was funny.

I'm not bickering - the assumption behind the joke is that Iraq was a huge mistake - if you disagree you obviously aren't going to find it funny - if you think iraq was a really stupid move then he is clearly saying that bush is stupid

So, If I'm Jewish, I won't find 'Jew jokes' funny?

No, that's exactly the issue. Tell me what's humorous about it? Clue me in here, Keith. I really don't get it.

There's 954 ways he could've made his statement funny and I haven't seen on TV, talked to another person, or read online from any human being that they found what he said amusing, whether they're a Democrat, Republican, Communist, Whig, whatever, but you claim it's obvious.

c'mon Erik, you are hammering home a point that isn't really a solid point.

Whether or not you, or anyone else for that matter, found the "joke" funny doesn't make it any less of a joke, it just makes it an unfunny attempt at humor.

I'm sure before that "joke" by Kerry, you have never heard a comedian or person tell a joke that fell completely flat and nobody laughed at or got.

Kerry's attempt at humor fell flat, was ill-timed and downright stupid and unfunny, but don't ramble on about how you need it explained to you.

He was trying to make a leap of reasoning that poor planning and education can lead you into a world of crap, just like our Prez. (I assume)

Edit: or maybe it was spin by calling it a joke, like when you walk up to a white friend at a club and call him your nigga, then two people over a black guy is glaring at you and you say, "it was a joke homey"

The democrats are such fucking idiots. Their media strategy looks like it was put together by a 1st grader. And not a smart 1st grader, a short bus rider.

If I were chair of the DP here's what I would do:

Put Obama on every cable news channel with the following message: "It's clear that Senator Kerry made a mistake, and he apologized for it. The fact that a few words spoken by a member of the opposing party is the strongest thing the GOP has going for it leading up to these elections speaks volumes about the sad state of their party. There are a lot of people dying every day in Iraq, and that's the last thing the GOP wants on voters' minds. This thing that has dominated a news cycle is zero content and all politics. LET'S TRY TO KEEP OUR EYE ON THE BALL, PEOPLE."

Boom, you turn the politicization of a few words back on the party that really is in utter distress.

In 1984, Jackson became the second African American (after Shirley Chisholm) to mount a nationwide campaign for President of the United States, running as a Democrat.

A major controversy erupted during the early stages of the race, when Jackson was reported making remarks in which he referred to Jews as "hymies" and to New York City as "Hymietown,". He initially denied using those terms, and though he later issued an apology, the remarks were widely publicized and were believed to have negatively impacted his campaign.

I knew what Hymietown was referencing.

I thought it was funny though, that in one thread, you could tell me that I wouldn't understand a Bush-bashing joke because I'm a Republican, but you thought Hymietown was funny in spite of the fact you're a Jew. It's the ability to rationalize that in your head that is so striking to me.

Dems are idiots. Repubs have effed up nearly every way possible, and still they can't get control. Anyway.

For the record, Kerry said, "Education - if you make the most of it and you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."

His prepared text stated, "Do you know where you end up if you don't study, if you aren't smart, if you're intelectually lazy? You end up getting us stuck in a wat in Iraq. Just ask President Bush."

That's all I've got.

jesus peace - you implied that you didn't know the reference

i just merely suggested that if someone still thought Iraq was a great mission we'll forever be lauded for they wouldn't get the joke

if we're on different wavelengths its because youre feigning ignorance about Kerry's joke to be difficult - it's so clear what the joke was that if you look at the first reports of the joke by the rightwing newsbusters they claimed that Kerry would claim he was referring to Bush to sidestep his insult of the troops

In reality, the Republican's feigned ignorance, so they could be insulted.
