Ok, playing in a $5 mtt now. Tournament is in its beginning stages, aveage stack is about 2000 blinds are 25-50

I'm dealt JJ in mid position (and have 3400 chips), its folded to me. I make it 100 to go, one caller.

Flop comes 2 3 3

He bets out 50, i raise to 200 he calls

Turn is 5 He checks, i bet out 200 again, he goes allin for another 1200.

Only notes i have on this guy is that he minimum raises the nuts, and seems to play solid tight agressive poker.

I fold this?

Two hands later, dealt JJ on the button (have 3000 chips, ave is 2200). Two limpers, i raise to 150 SB calls everyone else folds.

He bets 50, i raise to 250 he calls

Turn is a wonderful card for me, J

He bets 50 again, i raise to 500 he calls

River is 2 He moves allin and has me covered. I have 2100, just below average, and im more than happy to play a shortstack (my last 3 MTT i was shortstacked all the way to final table, and made top3 both times)

I thought he was on a flush draw the whole time, but he clearly doesnt have me on a set, really not sure about this hand

Do i fold or call?

How many times does it have to be said here.
People HAVE to stop raising 2x in MTTs. Its just horrible strategy and its never valuable.

With JJ your raise needs to be to 150 or 200.

Your flop raise is fine, your turn bet is horrible weak and small, and I can't give you advice on the decision because he might be making a move on you, which I would do there too.


I think you played the second hand a lot better.
Call depends on how many chips you have left.

How much should i raise here?

Im not saying you should bet, but if you do bet it has to be a bet large enough (at least the pot) to make your opponent consider moving off a smaller flush or two pair.
I would check the turn and see how he plays the river.

fold them both. If he shows two off-suit cards, congratulate him on a nice bluff.

well the first one i folded pretty easily, he showed me pocket 3s for flopped quads. Guess my notes saying he min bets the nuts should be listened to.

Second one i was tempted, but it left me enough chips to play with. He showed me 72o for two pair.

I think the plays here are actually fairly obvious. I like what absolute wrote about raising to 150 or 200...i usually make it about 4x's, maybe 3.5x's to switch it up but no less...its just a bad play to let weaker hands in for cheap....
The first hand, its pretty obvious a fold here is in store...he could have been playing a number of different hands here that had you beat. Flopped trips, boat...or the flushdraw....a lot of players will do that, lead with a solid hand into the pf raiser, expecting to get raised, then just smooth call intending to checkraise the turn...while JJ on this flop looks pretty good, ask yourself...what would this guy do this with? TT?? no...2's?? no...and since you have him as tight solid and aggressive, you clearly know youre beat. As for the second problem, not so obvious, but i thought it was pretty clear still. The ONLY hand that was going to beat you (reasonably...the sb did call the raise) was a flush. You had top set...so its an either or situation...he has the flush and he wins, he doesn't have the flush and you win...so now the question is, does he have the flush? well...although its common to semi bluff a flush draw on the flop like that...its very uncommon and very stupid to bet again at the turn when the pf raiser came over the top and has position...so given his action i would have assumed that he wsan't on the flush draw, and therefore would have made the call...although my perspective may be a bit skewed simply from having read the results already...but either way i wouldn't have put him on the flushdraw that whole time....

This is probably true.
But I still think there was probably a way to avoid having to see a turn, especially in the first hand.

1st hand is a toss up. There's too many hands to beat you to make that call. he could be played a 45s for some reason and call because of your weak preflop raise but I think it's too scary of a board to call.

2nd hand I would take a while, but after reading the situation over and over, I put him on a busted straight draw trying to buy the pot. Obviously he could have the flush but why would he put such a tough decision on you if he wants a call? It's a tossup, but I'd call it.
