Full Version: My Heads Up Match With Throwemaway
FCP Poker Forum > Poker Strategy Forum > Tournament Play
goheels
Ok, so here we go. My general strategy going into heads up play was to keep the pots small. I was pretty far behind, but I still had 30 BB's, so there was a ton of play left and I thought chipping away was a good way to start. With that many BBs I don't really feel restricted at all with my play, I think I can pretty much use any move I think is necessary.

Not going to create a big pot out of position w/ 4 high PF. standard stuff. I did notice that when I checked to him he bet the pot when I didn't really feel like he could have hit. Does he bet pot on a bluff? Might need to check raise re-bluff later. Store that away.

Here I limp PF, not something I do too often, but keep the pot small and mix things up. I hit the 3 on the flop so when he checks I'm betting. I bet a little over 1/2 of the pot.

I like this size bet b/c it doesn't have to work to often to be profitable. Another benefit that is less obvious is that if I bet this much when I hit I can bet a little smaller on bluffs later and it will be believable. I really like to set things up early to be able to bluff small later.

He calls my bet which is a little strange to me so I check behind on the turn, again, keep the pot small.

On the river he bets 600 into a 900 pot. I thought there was a small chance he was on a flush draw, but I kind of called this bet for information (and maybe I was good).

I saw that he hit the A and checked twice...store that away, it could be important.

This is a good hand to show down. Most people would raise w/ two broadways, but it shows that I don't have to raise. Next time he limps I might raise b/c he'll probably think I'm strong. BTW, I call most reasonable bets on the river here, would have been a pretty transparent bluff I think.

I flop two pair here and I think there's a good chance he either hit or the board it scary enough for him to bluff at it so I check. He obliges and I want to go on and either end it here or get him to call with a draw. I don't really care which to be honest, a double would be good but it was a good pot that increased my stack by almost 20% w/ no risk. icon_dance.gif

He hasn't been raising much OOP, but I have the button and I'm not going to let him just take it from me. Limp folding sets a bad precedent, I'm not going to be run over.

I hit and he leads which doesn't really mean too much. I don't want to play a big pot here with bottom pair so I call and check it down.

It's important to remember the hands that you've shown down b/c those are the only ones he sees. Now he's going to remember that I called a raise w/ Q6 and I think I can use that to see some cheap flops later. Also, if he raises me again OOP I can assume he has a stronger holding then a bad A. Lots of information on a seemingly simply hand.

This was a weird one. I hadn't been raising from the BB much and I had a hand that was probably good so I pumped it up and he called. (getting me back for calling with Q6 I guess). I missed but he probably did too. So I checked w/ the intention of calling and leading the turn (at least I had a plan). He checked behind so I know he missed now. check the turn, I would probably call again depending on bet size. I know I'm good at the river so I just throw a min bet out for value and to not have to show my hand. If he calls I'm good if not he doesn't know what I raised OOP with. Ehh, I don't know about this hand.

Raised OOP with a less then great hand, but you have to every now and then and he calls, this is becoming a theme. I miss but sometimes you just have to suck it up and c-bet OOP and hope he missed. 1200 in the pot and I bet 800 nand he folds icon_dance.gif

I'm chipping up nicely here and I think I have a lot of momentum going so I call with a good hand even though I'm OOP. Very nice flop for me I usually play top pair like it's the nuts heads up. He took the lead PF so I check hoping he makes a big bet like he had shown a tendency to do (having the info does no good if you don't use it). He bets, smaller then I would have liked but it will do, and I'm going to end it right now...Awwwww in babbby. Nice pot and I keep chipping up.

This was an interesting hand. Call with and A, standard, I'm not re-raising b/c I want to continue to play small ball, but re-raising is something I absolutely must start doing more. I hit the flop and check to see what he does. He bets his standard amount and I call (should I raise here, maybe, not sure). I check the turn b/c I think a lead here gets raised the vast majority of the time and he pushes. Decision time.

At this point I think I have the clear momentum edge and getting involved in a monster pot for all of my chips with bottom pair seemed bad at the time. My read was he had QJ (tremomey agreed), but I just couldn't pull the trigger on the 70/30. Would I have been more apt to call w/ K4 since I would have had one of his outs, probably, but who knows. I don't know about this hand at all.

BIG hand here. Raise with ATs, obvious.

I whiff the flop, but it's not a good flop to c-bet so I check, I would have probably called a reasonable bet here since I didn't think he hit (good read, lol)

I pick up a spade draw on the turn so it's time to fire. He just calls...whats going on here?

I hit the money card and my hand it REALLY well disguised. I check here for a couple of reasons. I thought he might have had a flush draw too in which case he's going to bet. I thought he might have air, in which case he'll have to bet. Either way I strongly felt like he HAD to bet that river. He fires 1000 and I have 4000 left. The only raise I could make here was a push anything else looks wayyy to much like a value bet and if he's going to call 1500 more he's going to call 3000 more. (remember I thought either air of a flush)

He turns over the flopped str8 and I have the chip lead. I want to hear his thoughts on this hand.

Good analysis..I'm at work but when I get home and have time, I'm going to post my Pf Holdings and make comments on the hands as well..I was really distracted and tired playing this HU and it shows.. I was playing another MTT at the time and had been playing for too long..

I'll have a post later tonight hopefully
It also didn't help that you kept getting dealt KK, my god

AA, KK, KK, and QQ and got no action on any of them except a small one when I limp re-raised. Boooooooooo

Man that was long.

Good insight though.

One thing I did notice is the few times you made smaller raises you had weaker hands. I think you certainly took advantage of position very well and picked up small pots well.

After you call his bet on the flop you are left with 1900 chips or so. Did you think of putting a bet out on the turn to protect your hand? I think most of the time you are ahead here and if not you might get a hand like 78 or something like that to fold. I understand you want to keep the pot smaller but the size of the pot currently represents more than your stack so this is a very important hand. What do you plan on doing if he pushes the turn?

This hand played out exactly as the previous hand except this time the chip stacks were closer and he shoved the turn. Although he could have a drawing hand or complete air here, he showed on the other hand that he would give up after a c-bet got called on the flop. However, he might have remembered the Q6 hand and assumed you were weak. I think its more likely that he actually has a big hand this time.

GG you guys.. I'm interested to see throw's hands.
goheels
On the Q6 hand...

I don't think 78 is anywhere close to his range here. I could be wrong, but he wasn't raising enough for that to be a possibility in my mind. I thought about shoving the turn when he checked, but I couldn't think of a single hand that was better then mine that would fold, he's not even laying down A7 here with the price he was going to be getting.

I know I was going to be short after the hand if I lost, but 8 bbs is managable when your opponent is playing tight and you're having success stealing the blinds.

I was testing here to see how aggressive you would get..If you bet the turn, I was going to C/R you all in...Since you checked behind, I put out a value bet because I was almost sure I was ahead and it might look like a missed draw...The only thing I might have done a bit differently is bet a bit more on the river

I hate hand like this. Obvious call with the A heads up, then I missed and he checked behind one the flop. I almost led the turn, but I felt like he might be trapping for some reason.

I had AQ on this hand.. I don't always c/bet as to mix things up..When I got checked to twice, I figured I still was best and that you were'nt particularly interested in the hand...Fired a delayed c/bet and took it down, nothing extraordinary..

I had air, 7 5 os..Hadn't seen you C/r yet so I tried to pick up a pot on a coordinated board

I had 87...Picked up a gut shot on the flop and put in a standard c/bet that got snapped..It happens, no way I can call the all in

Your analysis is good here..I was really distant when I was playing and was playing my cards way too much instead of playing the player..I was super tired and playing another MTT..You rightfully picked up on it

I had Q10 here..I really thought you were on a draw here, and if you werent and a scare card hit the river, I don't have any visibility..Also, I had lost a few pots before this so I was hoping you might think I'm on tilt and was pushing a draw or missed overs

This was the most important hand of HU...I had some connected cards and would rather see cheap flops, but I'm also not going to get pushed around on the button..So I called the PF raise

Flop le nuts..I correctly put you on two high cards so I checked behind on the flop hoping you would catch up a bit...Turn made me puke in my mouth a bit, but I need need need need to raise here..I have to start getting chips in the pot because chances are most of the time I can't get them all on the river and have to spread it out between streets...Bad river card...I think I was tilted by that point and made the crying call after you C/R me all in...

Big mistake here was not raising the turn

Nice hand to see a flop with, really hoping I can bust him here. I was going to check push the flop, but he didnt cooperate. Lead the turn when I'm strong, I thought it was a good board for this since it looked like he had to have hit something. ehh.

I had 76 of spades..Not a good flop or board for that, way too coordinated...

I had AA that hand.. Was hoping you would try to continue pressing me like you had but of course you miss completely w/ a bad hand..Blah

Everything else was really standard..I was getting absolute garbage for hands and needed a 2x pronto...Lost the race and that was it...

I needed to step up my aggression a bit more on the button and not be so predictable..I never c/r'ed him, I never tried any bluffs really or plays really..There was a few situations looking back when I had K highs where I should have raised or called your raise w/, but besides that and what I've mentioned, my hands were kind of tied...
