I don't know where the rule is listed (for the exact definition) but from my understanding the ball has to be deemed catchable for there to be pass interferance, and that is why they are saying they didn't call the penality because he would not have ever had a chance to catch the ball with the other defender tipping it.
This rule needs some more clarification because in this instance I think they might be taking it a bit literally. If he doesn't get held by the defense he might be able to make a better play on the ball, not to mention he was being interfered with before the ball was tipped.
Don't forget though that if a pass is ever tipped then there can not be interference, but you usually see that when it's tipped at the line of scrimage. I've always wondered why when a defensive player sees a tipped pass they don't just totally level the potential receiver and get a easy int.
I wonder if the NCAA will comment on that call.
Notre Dame needs to drop to at least 8th ot 9th. And they better watch out for MSU next week, because they are a physical team with quite a few of their own weapons on offense. I thought it was funny how NBC keeps trying to make Wise look like a genious though. While they are getting blown out they are saying things like "Wise said they didn't have a good week of practice so he saw this coming". Get of the Irish nutsack already.
No matter what anyone says, it was an atrocious call. Yeah, of course the ball was 'uncatchable'...you know, with the whole defender tackling the receiver by the legs and pulling him to the ground thing. The blatant interference happened WELL before the ball was tipped..so the tip shouldn't even be considered. It was interference, there is no doubt about it. LSU just got screwed.
