The Giants aren't going anywhere, but down. They need to rebuild.

For the next few years, the Giants are going to be built on young pitching. They have Lowry and Cain already solid pitchers in the majors, with Jonathan Sanchez probably ready to start next year and Tim Lincecum coming up in 2008 at the latest. They are stacked in young pitching prospects.

Their problem is their offense. But with a good-sized payroll, they can go out and get a couple of good bats for the middle of their lineup next year.

This is significantly more optimistic than I thought I could be about the Giants. Wow.

They've got to clear a lot of those old farts out first though. I can see the Giants being a pretty strong team in the future, but not now.

The old farts are all gone after this year.

Contracts that are up, off the top of my head: Finley, Bonds, Alou, Durham, Schmidt, Kline, Feliz, Hillenbrand, Stanton. I think there's a couple more too.

Okay, Vizquel will still be around next year, but I love Omar Vizquel and any bad words said about him will make me sob uncontrollably.

Yes he must. Im a diehard A's fan, but I liked the Giants as a kid with Will Clark and Matt Williams. They will be my 2nd favorite team once Barry Bonds retires and or dies.

They're projecting him as a starter right now. His line from a couple nights ago in San Jose:

Player IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA
Lincecum 5.2 1 0 0 2 11 0 2.38

He's been insane this year in the minors. Thinking about how good the Cain/Lincecum/Lowry/Sanchez rotation can be for years makes me really happy.

But then I remember that the Giants can't develop position players for shit. And that brings me right back down to earth.

Jonathan Sanchez=next year's Matt Cain.

Okay, maybe not that good. But still pretty good. Maybe a league average starter next year.

Yeah, I look really smart now that the Giants decided to bring back like half of these guys.

Pedro Feliz is my least favorite non-Dodger-or-Pierzynski-or-Ricky-Ledee-if-he's-not-on-the-Dodgers-anymore player in baseball. He's terrible.

Also, I guess you can disregard what I said about Sanchez starting. Because he's not, because Russ Ortiz is apparently the answer to this team's problems.

As a long time, die hard, Giants fan, I was really disappointed with their off season as far as offense and the bullpen.

I think the starters can and will hang with any rotation in the division but if we can't figure out how to score more than 1 run a game (save for the gift runs vs the Pares in our only win) this is going to be a LOOOONNNNGGGG season I'm afraid.

Agreed that Pedro needs to go away. Dude's 30 years old and still can't lay off breaking pitches in the dirt. We'll be luckly to get something like 260. 25. 75 out of him this year.

I love Brian Sabian but his lust for past their prime veterans is tired, unproven and killing us.

Lowry looked good early, too bad he got hurt. wink.gif Pretty shocking performance, I'd be worried that it's more then the wrist, something mental if I was unfortunate enough to be a Giants fan.

Zito on opening day at Chavez Ravine. TYTYTYTY Bruce Bochy for not starting Cain or Linsecum.

I find it amusing that the Giants local advertising is pushing the 'these guys will run ground balls out'. Makes me giddy every time I hear it, because it both rips Bonds and highlights their lack of offense at the same time.

And they almost became the Tampa Bay/St Petersburg Giants in the early 90's. Their supposed last visit to Candlestick, the Dodgers team was really cool about signing for the fans in SF, so I got a ball with Brett Butler, Pedro Astacio, Lenny Harris, Mike Sharperson, Kevin Gross, Dave Hansen, Tom Goodwin, Henry Rodriguez, and a rookie Mike Piazza. That's about the only good memory I have of Candlestick in regards to baseball.

Potentially the worst team in MLB history? I was listening to the Razor yesterday on the way home when a caller asked about just starting from scratch and trading all their players including Lincecum and Cain. Ralph dismissed the idea as dumb but the Giants should take a page out of the A's book who unloaded Haren and Swicher for multiple prospects.

You sell high and buy low and right now, they can sell Cain and Lincecum high. Both are injury risks especially with the way Bochy is pitching them; can't believe that he brought Lincecum back after a 74 min rain delay in LA. Probably figured that he wouldn't have a chance to win another game for the rest of the season.

The Giants are going to suck for awhile - I'd say at least three years and that's if they had a GM that knew what he was doing. With Sabean, they have no chance since Sabean probably doesn't know what any of the acronyms in Baseball Prospectus even stand for. At least the Dodgers outbid the Giants for Pierre although we end up with Roberts who at least is a lower cost version of the same crummy player. If only another team could have outbid them for Zito; alas, no other team was that dumb.

And play Davis, Lewis, Ortmeir, Velez. You might as well find out what you have with them. And at least Rowand was moved up in the order - what was with batting your best hitter 6th? Bochy is not going to help the Giants with managerial wizardry like that.

I have to admit that my enjoyment of reading Tim Kawakami in the SJ Merc has increased exponentially as he writes exactly what I'm thinking whenever he rips on the Giants.

Giants need to do a few things:

1. Play the young guys... They hyped it all winter that they would play younger guys etc, then yesterdays lineup had all veterans and an A ball kid. I mean, I don't think Fred Lewis is going to be a superstar by any means, but if I was a Giants fan I'd much rather watch him then Dave Roberts or Randy Wynn.

2. Fire Sabean....Obv.

3. Trade, trade, trade....Dump Wynn to the first team that needs an OF, trade Durham if you can find a taker...and as good as Cain and Lincecum are, if a contender (Yankees for instance) want to throw their whole farm system at you at the deadline, then I'd strongly consider making the deal. That would be a good way to jump start a rebuilding process, and having two dominant pitchers in the NL west w/ no lineup won't get you very far, nor is it unique; every team in the NL West is stacked with pitching.

smile.gif I read the Kawakami article today too and obv listen to KNBR too much, so I heard that caller. Ralph isn't a homer really, but he is a very big fan so I think it's hard for him to consider letting the one possitive the team has go. Like the caller said though, the Giants are wasting some of the prime years in Lincecum and Cain's careers, and you know that as soon as they get their 5 years in they are going to be members of the: Yankees, Red Sox, Angels, Dodgers, etc etc. That is why when the GIants signed Zito, the first thing I mentioned to people was how that could keep them from signing both players when they became free agents.

Oh well, pretty obvious by now that Sabean has no ability/desire in regards to planning for the future.

Heh - well as a Dodgers fan, at least there's one team in the west you don't have to worry about. I'm interested to see how Torre manages the Dodgers although playing Pierre over Kemp is mind boggling to me. Maybe Ned is whispering "play him so the signing doesn't look that atrocious" in the background? I see that Loaiza is already working his magic - had enough of him when he was on the A's. The Dodgers do have some nice young players though so it should be a fun race in the west this year.

I don't begrudge Zito the $, no one forced the Giants to pay him that much - more power to him. As long as Zito is giving 100%, I'm fine with him. That signing along with the Durham, Roberts, Winn, Molina, Vizquel, Klesko, and Aurilia signings when it's obvious the Giants need to get younger were just terrible.
GeneralGeeWhiz

Jonathan Sanchez tonight. This kid is great. I expect him to dominate tonight. I know he got crushed against the Brewers, but they crush all lefties and Sanchez still had 8 strikeouts in 4 innings. I really wish him, Lincecum and Cain could get out of the mess that is the Giants.

Good call on Sanchez - didn't even get the W but at least the Giants managed to scrape across one run. Other good news in that Fred Lewis will play since Roberts is hurt; I'm pretty sure that Roberts might not make that throw at the plate to save a run last night. Getting Lewis/Davis at bats to see what they can do is the first step in playing the younger guys.

Dan Johnson was just designated for assignment by the A's; if the Giants do not pick him up off of Waivers for nothing, then they should just fire Sabean now. Johnson is no great shakes but he's a left handed bat who plays a decent 1B and could at least platoon with Aurilia/Ortmeir (who only bats right now). Johnson actually bats about the same vs righties and lefties but he does have some power which the Giants don't have. Extremely low risk and he's a better bat then what they have now at 1B.

There's no reason not to pick him up unless Sabean is still pissed over signing Zito from the A's.
Moneyball16
They should definitely pick up Johnson. He would be a huge upgrade at first base atleast against right handed pitchers, but Im not confident they will pick him up. First of all he is only 28, Sabean knows that he probably wont be any good till hes 35 and plus I dont know if the Giants could stomach using Oaklands scraps as their starting first baseman.

Reuter was helped out by the generous strike zone in his prime as he lived on the pitch that was off the plate (similar to Glavine). Once they tightened up the strike zone, he was done.

I'd still take Zito as his fastball is still better than Reuter's and Zito also has a better change/curve. Zito can be a middle of the rotation innings eater/workhorse as he never gets hurt but that contract is still obscene. I don't blame Zito though as long as he's giving his best - obviously another brilliant move by Sabean.

On a separate note, I wish that Krukow wasn't such a homer as I appreciate Barnett's work on the Warriors and Remenda's work on the Sharks as examples of being supportive of the teams while also offering objective analysis and the willingness to call out players who screw up. On the other hand, whenever I hear Physioc/Hudler on the Angels or Santo on the Cubs, maybe Krukow isn't that bad after all.

It's refreshing to hear a Giants fan knock Krukow, you are now a-ok by my book. smile.gif

Boy there were some ugly FA pitchers available that year - perfect timing for Zito to come out. Signing Zito was ok but that price was just rididonkolous as he really shouldn't have gotten any more $ than Lilly or Meche. $40m for 4 years or $55M for 5 years would have been acceptable at that time since we didn't know that Zito had somehow lost 5 mph on his fastball. In hindsight now, he's not even worth that but back then, a salary equal to Lilly/Meche would have been ok.

I've always liked Zito plus he's gone out with Alyssa Milano and Hillary Duff - it's all good in Zito's world.

I'm much more of an A's fan as In Billy I trust - I just like a GM who makes rational decisions - it's really impossible being a Giants fan as long as Sabes is running the show.

Yeah, at the time I thought Zito was a quality #2 starter, but obv not worth what the Giants paid him. From what I recall, a lot of the local talk was they felt pressured to spend money that off season, and every other big name free agent had spurned them. At least you guys have gotten more production out of Zito then the Dodgers have out of Schmidt...then again, that brings up the question of would the Giants be better off with Zito injured... smile.gif
gobears
So the Giants end up passing on Dan Johnson who gets picked up by the Rays. Even though Bowker is being tried at 1B now, Johnson would be an improvement over the Ortmeir/Aurilia tandem. Based on the mantra to get younger, Johnson for Aurilia seems like a no-brainer.

And now they waive Rajai Davis who did hit .282 for them last year with a .345 obp and plays stellar defense and is fast but probably too young for them - better to keep Winn and Dave Roberts around.

And the A's swoop in and pick up Davis - not sure what Beane will do with him but I have a feeling that Emil Brown will be moved at some point during the season since he's hitting pretty well and might garner a decent prospect or two.
Moneyball16
To be fair the Giants didn't have a chance to pick up Johnson since Tampa had less wins then them last year, but they may get their chance now because Tampa dropped Johnson when they picked up Gabe Gross.
