Okay, so I have been having huge problems recently with my PC dropping the connection. I moved about 2 months ago and never had any problems at my other house. Now, sometimes, it can happen 3 or 4 times in one night. Not fun when you are running deep in a tournament (last night happened with only 7 people left). I know it is impossible to say for sure what the problem is but if I could get different possibilities so I could look into it, that would be great. Thanks.

Who is your provider?
TheSkins
Most likely to be your ISP or Telco.
Wandigo
Are you on a satelite connection or no? At my house, our connection recently went kaput because it's wireless and 1) there's water logged in the antenna and 2) a big tree started growing right in the path of the of signal.

If you don't, try calling your ISP and see if they can ping you and see if it's something on their side or something that is wrong within your home.

The first question is whether you have cable or dsl.

Cable companies tend to have worse reliability then dsl and the performance with cable can vary widely even with the same cable companie depending on your local node.

Your first call should be to your ISP and hope they understand what the issue is.

if its dsl, its probably an intermittent sync/slow throughput issue. it will only get worse as time progresses if you don't get your dsl provider to send someone to look at the lines.

who is your provider, that will seriously help.

If its an older home the fault is prob in the wiring...

Check the NID box outside (usually grey colored where the main line enters the house) and count how many wires are inside the homeowners side. There should be as many in there as outlets in the house.

If there is just one, it means the person that wired the place ran the wires from "box to box" meaning there are connections inside the outlet boxes.

Phone wires are tiny and hard to splice for the average person that dosent have acess to 3M's skotch-lock connectors. The correct way to wire them is to run independent lines from each wall outlet to the NID and make all splices inside it with the proper terminals. Each connection in the series just adds noise and the possibility of a dropped call.

Homeowners who work on this stuff usually screw it up (thats why the phone co. side is not easily gotten into

Call SBC and request the service dept. check out the problem. Be sure and tell them the problem started right after you saw some construction guys working around the pedistal. Be there when the service guy shows up and tell him what is happening. They are paid by the hour and are glad to troubleshoot problems like yours instead of wading around in a muddy ditch somewhere.

He'll turn it in to the central office as a line problem on their side and you wont get billed for anything...

A good friend of mine retired after 30 years at Alltel. I used to ride around with him in AR drinking beer and learning how to tap lines and call for free. All you need is a "butt-end" (down Ron) and a ped wrench.

I need to write a book one of these days...

Yeah, the house was built in 2001 so it sounds like I need to just call SBC and get them out here. So I am correct in assuming this isn't normal for a PC right?
