As I said, I was feeling frisky once again and couldn’t wait to tangle with the chip man. With the blinds now at $1,000-$2,000 with a $300 ante, I raised to $5,000 from first position with the 7spades 4spades. I know, I know, the books tell you to fold those hands. I guess I should read one of them, eventually. Or, better yet, when I write one, I’ll explain to you why these types of hands do very well in deep-stack tournaments. Guys like Alan Goehring, Gus Hansen, Phil Ivey, and the like don’t play these hands because they are bored; they play them because there is method to the madness.

I myself will raise this type of hand if conditions are right, (Late position, large stack, late in tourney, blinds are weak)but UTG and mid tourney? Gus Hansen also stated in his feature Card Player article that people think he is a maniac because he plays these type of hands very aggressively but that there is " a method to his maddness."

So what is the method? Why do the pros believe these type of hands fair well when the money is deep? The best you can hope for is to hit your draw then pray no one calls your big flop bet.

the method is disguising your hand and having the opportunity to break someone w/a relatively low risk to your stack...

i think these hands fair well when the money is deep because you can afford to play them (even for a raise) and your risk is very low in relation to your stack..

theres also a chance that everyone will just fold bec they fear a lot of strength from an ep raise and therefore you will be less likely to get re raised and if someone does come over the top you have an easy decision...

this will also completely loosen up you table image if your hand is shown and when you raise ppl wont know if you have QQ or 7-4

They don't. They think the have very good visability, they're very rarely dominated and can break people with big cards when they hit a well disguised draw.

They also increase the action they get when they have a "real" hand.

Als0, if you only get 1 or 2 callers after the flop, you might be able to steal the pot with garbage if a not so dangerous flop comes.
