I have a friend going to Melbourne for a couple of weeks. Any locals (or ex-locals) know of any clubs in town for a good game?

Obviously there is the crown casino, but we're looking for alternatives

the RAKE at crown casino is the worst EVER !!!!!!
the food is Sh!T and the service for the bev is soo bad it allmost is funny !!!!

on the upside the 5-10 omaha hi lo on friday is sooo juicy its allmost worth getting robbed with the RAKE !!!!!

if you play no limit expect to pay a seat fee AND a hugh rake !!!

stick to crown or you will have a problem !!!!

The Rake at Crown Casino is 10%. That's not the worst ever is it? You don't have to tip either. I'm quite sure there is no seat charge. I think your thinking of Star City in Sydney. They charge $1 per hand at the 1-2 NL game! icon_eek.gif

The games are very soft at Crown. The 4/8 game resembles .25-.50 online. tongue.gif

25.cent .50 cent ~ please
1cent 2 cent more like it !!!!

the 10-20 limit is a good game !!!
but i will warn you the 2-5 no limit is no joke there !!!
last time i played the 2-5 i was sitting with an aussie millions winner and wsop braclet winner .
and the seat and rack fee sucks!!!!

I played at the Crown in Feb this year. I mainly played the 4/8. Past 11pm, the tables tend to fill up with tourist who don't really know how to play.

You will get sucked out on quite a few times, but they more than make up for it by calling your big hands down. Don't be surpised to see the pot capped in 5 or 6 spots.

In the 7 or 8 times I played I never once had a losing session. I tended to turn a $300 buy in into $700/800 in 5/6 hour session.

You'll find the game played at a more leisurely rate than Vegas, based on the fact that you cannot tip the dealers.

Im in melbourne right now, and have been playing at the crown. They have a seat charge of $AUS 5 per hour and they rake the pot. The 2-3 NL game has a max buy-in of $200. They also offer 1-2NL ($60 max buy in), 4-8 Limit, 10-20 limit, 5-5-10 NL and a few other games. They are currently refurbishing the poker room and so it may be smaller than usual right now. The games are soft-ish, usually 3 terrible players who'd go all in with TP-poor kicker, a couple of loose non-believers and a couple of solid players. In a session this week I won almost a $AUS 1000 pot in the 2-3NL game, all in 4 way pre-flop with pocket kings. Pass the sugar.

They must have introduced the $5 per hour rule since Feb.

Crown only charges the $5 per hour on the 1/2, 2/3, 2/5 NLH and the 1/2 and 5/10 PLO games. I believe the 5/5/10 and 25/50 NLH games are a higher time charge. Also, the pots are raked at 10% but capped on the 1/2 and 2/3 games to $6 and I beleive it's $8 on the 2/5 game. Unsure of the 5/5/10 and 25/50 game as I've never played it.

Crown is the casino in Melb and therefore the only real place you can find a game unless it's a privately organised home game in which case it's illegal to take a rake.

The limit games do not have a hourly time charge.

The new poker room will be opened in mid August in time for the Vic Champs which is gonna be a great tournement. Main event is an AU$1650 buyin, 20k chip stack and levels are every hour. First prize guarenteed to be at least AU$100k. Should be an absolute hoot!

Star City in Sydney does charge $1 per hand while at the table.
