Had he stayed on the pitch, France may have won. He is one man, and in a penalty shootout that counts for little. He may have taken a penalty in place of one of the players that scored. I really think that is would only make the slightest difference in such a crapshoot as a penalty shootout. Buffon is a far better keeper than Barthez, and Italy easily had more set piece talent on the pitch.

France was lucky to get to overtime much less PK's. The only reason they had a score was because the ref made a bad call.

in reality it had no effect on the outcome. the only french player to miss, trezeguet, would have definitely been one of the shooters even if zidane was in. he is one of their best goal scorers.

It doesn't matter that Trezeguet missed, and that he would have still shot if Zidane stayed in. First of all, Zidane cost his team a chance to score with 10 minutes of overtime still remaining. They had a few close opportunities, and if they'd had 11 men they might have scored.
Secondly, if Zidane had stayed in, the shootout would have gone totally differently. Maybe Italy wins the shootout 3-0, maybe France wins 5-4, who knows, but everything that happened, every split-second decision and shot would have been entirely different and unique, so you can't say that Trezeguet still misses and Italy wins.

except in rare circumstances, best pker is always kickin 5th mainly b/c of the pressure they are under if it gets to them. Generally when it gets down to this position you want your best player kickin to deal with the that kind of pressure. I mean i was nervous watchin the 5th guy kickin for italy and i was just watchin from my tv

It looked OFFside to me.
Anyway, I'm not sure if Matterazzi said anything specific or not. He was obstructing Zidane some just prior to the headbutt and this was happening only minutes after Buffon made that tremendous, game-saving stop off Zidane's header. I'd say Zidane was just totally frustrated and had a very black moment.
