I received Mr. Negreanu’s hold’em DVD today. Overall I think it’s a good instructional DVD. (I would also note that for players who have yet to look to books and DVDs for instruction, it is better to start with a DVD than a book.)
I bought it primarily because I was hoping it would have a good discussion of heads-up strategy. In Negreanu’s The Circuit (cardplayer.com podcast show) interview, there was some discussion of Negreanu advising Fidler on heads-up strategy. Fidler commented that Negreanu’s strategy is very active from the button. And after Negreanu’s heads-up challenge matches, I was somewhat hopeful that the DVD would contain in depth discussion of heads-up play. While the DVD does mention some guidelines in heads-up play, Negreanu’s comments on heads-up play were very brief and are in the last section of the DVD that covered tips on a few items not covered in the main portion of the DVD.
(Maybe Negreanu’s upcoming book will offer more on heads-up play.)
I also own three of Mr. Lederer’s DVDs (Secrets of No Limit Hold’em; More Secrets of No Limit Hold’em; and his limit hold’em video). There are some comparisons that can be made between Mr. Lederer’s two DVDs on no limit hold’em, and Negreanu’s DVD. First of all, the main part of Negreanu’s DVD is divided into three separate sections, one covering instruction on beginner play, a section discussing improvements an intermediate player can make, and a section discussing more advanced play. Lederer’s Secrets of No Limit Hold'em (hereafter referred to as Secrets) covers beginner play, and his More Secrets of No Limit Hold'em (hereafter referred to as More Secrets) covers more advanced play. Negreanu’s DVD has the advantage of combining both beginner and more advanced play into one DVD, rather than having to buy two. Each of Lederer’s DVDs, however, are roughly about as long as Negreanu’s DVD. Lederer’s DVD offers a little more depth to discussion on some topics.
Both Negreanu’s section on beginner poker and Lederer’s Secrets video cover fundamental pre-flop poker. I believe it is critical that players first learn the fundamentals of pre-flop play, and to practice playing that way, before learning more loose styles. About 75% to 80% of Lederer’s Secrets video covers pre-flop play. Lederer’s discussion of fundamental pre-flop play is more in-depth than Negreanu’s discussion of fundamental pre-flop play in the beginner portion of his DVD. However, because Negreanu’s discussion of fundamental pre-flop play is briefer, it will be easier for beginning players to commit it to memory.
While Negreanu’s intermediate and advanced sections of his DVD and Lederer’s More Secrets DVD touch on some of the same topics, they also both have topics the other DVD does not discuss. For example, Negreanu’s DVD has a good discussion of what is “small ball poker,” and Lederer’s video provides specific advice on how to play 4th and 5th street.
I’ve read some criticism of Lederer’s DVDs saying that the production quality of the DVD was poor. (There are not a lot of frills to Lederer’s DVDs.) I always thought this was unimportant since you are paying for information, and not entertainment. But if this is important to you, Negreanu’s DVD was produced by MTV, and so the production quality is better. (Incidentally, as far as I can tell, about the only place you can buy it is at the MTV website). The dialogue in Negreanu’s DVD, however, sounds very scripted. But like I said, you are buying instruction, not a movie.
All things considered, I am glad I own both Negreanu’s DVD and Lederer’s DVDs.
Nicely said sir.
