Full Version: playing by the book

Hello,

I'm curious to know how high limits in online limit hold 'em you can beat by just "playing by the book", that is tight aggressive without any deceptive plays.
At which level do you guys start to mix it up to avoid being too easy to read?

It depends on your table selection, but I think right around 50c/1d blinds is where you might have to start pulling out a couple tricks every now and then. Of course, at some 1d/2d tables straight forward play will still work; occasionally (from what I hear) even higher than that. If you are looking for a general answer though, I'd say 25c/50c is the limit where you can still play strictly by the book and walk away a decent winner.

you can use straight forward tite aggressive play and dont have to mix it up online in a $30/$60 game...i literally laughed out loud at that last post, its simply not true...as the limits increase, the play doesn't...not until you get PAST 15/30, only then do players (on a larger scale) take into account at what the other players might have...seriously. As a matter of fact, and this is the honest to god truth...the $1/$2 game at party poker is WAY tougher than the 15/30...if you can regularly beat the 1/2, get a roll...and quit wasting time and get into 15/30..seriously. Look, if you deviate from solid hands and solid play at such a low level, all you'll be doing is out smarting yourself...you coming in for a raise with jts in late position will not act as a good raise pf in these games unless there are already a lot of limpers so you have a nice equity edge....as a rule of thumb, and this is going to sound ridiculous...but the vast majority of online players are ridiculous...is EVERY SINGLE bet or raise you make...make it strictly for value...NEVER semi bluff low limit because you virtually have no fold equity thusly taking away the profitability of that play....Its this simple: raise if you have equity or for value, call if you have the pot odds...fold everything else...DO NOT GET CUTE...you dont have to mix your play up until your over 30/60...trust me

i wanted to add something else...almost as proof. Think about it like this...if what was said was true, that being you have to mix your play up at the .50/1.00 and higher limit...then thats saying thats because your oponents are fairly observant and have a descent understanding of the game...therefore you need to deceive them...okay, well, when was the last time you saw a .50/100 table where there wasn't an average of 50% or more taking the flop?? How often do you see people sticking around with like K8off on a flop A-3-9?? i mean these players, probably over 95% simply don't know how to play cards in a winning way...most of them don't understand the fact that SOMETIMES you bet your flush draw and other times you don't...they wont realize this!?! hell...they don't even realize that you have the flush when they get checkraised after 4 people have already acted and its the only draw on board...you think they're gonna be thinking about what youre playing and how youre playing it when they don't even know how they're playing??? Trust me, its one of those things where if you have to ask at what limit you need to switch it up...youre no where near it, when you get there you'll know...

Why do you think the 1/2 game is so much harder than the 15/30 game? I'm in the process of trying to move up from 0.5/1...

It sounds like I should quit playing ultimate bet. I haven't seen a table stay above 25% to the flop in the last month. the lobby always reports higher numbers, but gametime usually shows me a flop percentage around 20 for the entire table at $.25/50 after 50 or so hands.

Meh, you're probably just a better player than me. I've never played even remotely close to $30/$60 so I wouldn't know about all that. As a sidenote, you seem like a stand up guy.

i dont think its necessarily HARDER, although i wrote that, my mistake. What i should have said was that the game at 1/2, on party poker at least, is incredibly tight...so walking away with big winnings is not very likely...however, solid tight play will getcha ya in there and make you some money...in that game, try to focus more on playing position than your cards: ie. if its folded up to you and your in the cutoff or button, go ahead and open the pot, with any two cards, a bet on the flop and on fourth st is usually more than enough to take it down...seriously, play aggressive and you should do very well. I guess then that would mean to wait just a little bit longer before you make the move so you have enough of a roll to play comfortable...you have to be able to push in that game cuz everyone is so tight...but best of luck.

ps. im not sure what was meant by me being a stand up guy followed by the emoticon with its eyes rolling...if i did anything to offend anyone i apologize i didn't mean to do that...

It wasn't that big a deal, but I strongly dislike it when someone actually takes the time to type that he laughed out loud at someone else's post. I consider myself a slightly above average amateur, that's all. I expect people to disagree with me every once in a while. But, I don't appreciate people disagreeing with me in that type of manner, regardless of how good they are. Daniel Negreanu himself could disagree with me by saying he laughed out loud at my post and I'd still be annoyed, despite the fact that I am sure he knows more about the subject than me. I do believe that you didn't mean to offend me though, and thanks for the apology. Good luck at the tables.

yeah i guess that was a little rude...

good luck to you to.
