Villian is 71/25/2.0 AF

Party Poker 1/2 Hold'em (5 handed) Hand History Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com (Format: FlopTurnRiver)

Preflop: Hero is UTG with J, K.
Hero raises, MP calls, 3 folds.

Flop: (5.50 SB) 3, J, K (2 players)
Hero bets, MP raises, Hero calls planning to check/raise turn.

I do this a lot HU. Should I just be 3-betting on flop, or given his aggressive nature should I try for the check-raise.

This is fine. If there are draws present you should consider three-betting, but against a maniac who will always bet, check/raise them to death.

I don't think it matters much
I 3-bet.

The idea of postponing your aggression is to gain a big bet on the turn rather than a small bet on the flop.

But in order to gain this fraction of a bet, you are risking some things as well:

- If villain does have a strong hand (AK), you will likely get more action out of him by 3betting this flop.
Check-raising the turn makes it much more clear that your hand is strong and will probably slow him down.
And a potential sare card on the river (another J) would cost you some action.

- There is always a chance that villain checks behind on the turn.
In that case, you lost a lot more than the sb you were trying to gain.

I push the flop.

3-bet, and then c/r the turn after he caps the flop icon_dance.gif

Going for the turn c/r is good in some spots, I think this guy is probably a little too aggressive though and we're giving up value by not 3-betting

I'm not fluent in Pokertrackerese, but if he's 'so' aggresive, I call the flop and lead/3 bet at the turn unless it's a scary card.
Of course, his aggression would have to be maniacal.

Otherwise, I like check raising the turn. Not only does it get you the big bet, I like check raising the turn with some regularity so I can check for a free card when I need it.

As everyone else has stated 3-bet the flop. If he will most likely bet the turn if checked to check-raise the turn.
