3/6 6max - AJ on the button

two limps, you raise.

Flop comes J 9 9 with a flush draw.

checked around, you bet, 3 calls.

Turn is an offsuit 3.

checked aroudn, you bet, 2 calls.

River is an offsuit 6.

First to act donks it (an unknown), one fold, action is on you.

Call, raise/call or raise/fold?

Pretty easy call to make here. I'm not folding my hand against an unknown and would hate getting 3-bet, so calling is good here. Decent chance he plays a 9 or a busted flush draw the same way and raising does nothing for you in both cases.

Absent a read I call here, but probably only because it would really REALLY bother me if I folded. Looks like 66 in the hole to me (perhaps 33), or a brutally played J9/A9o

I don't know how often somebody bets either busted draw on the river in a multiway protected pot first to act, but I can see some moron leading with QJ, JT, KJ. I'm inclined to believe he thinks his hand is good. I think this river bet is a bad value-bet with a hand you beat pretty a good portion of the time, certainly enough to justify calling. I know plenty of bad players that "take advantage" of aggressive players by playing vulnerable hands slowly and then leading the river.

I'm going to laugh real real hard when he turns over 99

folding is out of the question.
I need a read to raise here.

Probably not with great frequency, but I certainly see it from time to time. Sometimes it's a busted flush draw that makes a pair on the river.

What is "not with great frequency"?
