What do you think of this line? I don't want to bias anyone's thinking, so I'll give my thoughts later.

I might fold QQ55 unsuited instead of limping.
I almost certainly fold QQ55 to a raise from behind me preflop.
I definitely fold bottom set against a pot bet on the flop.

I don't see why you suddenly think middle set is good here, unless you think villain is going nuts with 66xx. Did it ever cross your mind that villain might have AAxx here?


I hate this whole hand...but then I hate undersets and underfulls.

As with most decisions in this game, it depends on your table image and what you know about the opponent and his tendencies.

Fwiw, I usually prefer to lead the flop with bottom set, folding to a pot raise. I suppose you could lead the turn, again with the option of folding to a reraise, since there's really not much he could raise you with besides AA. This also has the bonus of not letting him check behind with a draw.

I don't really like limp/calling with this starting hand. Flopping a naked set with no redraws is difficult to play correctly out of position, and your hand has nothing else going for it. If I play it at all, I would come in for a raise, and fold to a reraise indicating Aces or Kings.

Yeah, I was thinking that I played it wrong, and that I should have either led the flop or C/Red the flop with the idea that I'd fold to a raise/reraise. I certainly was thinking about AA, but I was afraid that AA would be pretty easy to represent there, and that if I just led out, he might reraise me with any piece, regardless of whether he actually had top set or not.

My big problem was that I didn't have a plan on the flop, and I wasn't realizing that he'd be able to get his whole stack in if I called down. Then on the turn, he only had $100 left and I didn't want to fold second set to a raise when I hadn't even shown any sign of strength yet, so I just reraised him.

I do think QQ55 is fine against a raise though. You flop a set one in four times, and in SS2, Lyle Berman says he plays reasonably high double paired hands against a raise in almost every position.

I'd prefer check-raising preflop to see where I'm at. If he comes over the top I'll fold.

In position, QQ55 would be fine. In my opinion, QQ55 isn't reasonably high as far as double pairs go. You flop a set one in four times, but half of those times it's a crap set.
