What things or inventions in the world are so amazing you are in awe of their inventors?
My list

1. airplanes, the ability to take huge metal planes and keep them mflying and defying gravity is crazy to me.
2. Television- transmitting images and sounds through satellites and all that craziness scares and confuses me
3. medicine- sublte chemical compounds blended together to help heal teh sick is crazy to me.

Anybody else got others. And before anybody says it, i know this is like striaght out of this sketch:

For me a lot of the ancient stuff does it.
Cities / monuments etc that have lasted for thousands of years.

The fact that everytime I press a lime slice into a bottle of Corona it seems to squirt juice straight in my eye....

I will be saddened if Mr. R Mexico makes no comment to my post by noon Friday.... It's the best set-up he could ever ask for

I agree with you. Television amazes me, especially when it seems that they make light and sound waves travel at the same speed, but I'm sure there's an explanation. Also, how computers can store thousands of documents on one little sheet of metal and silicon.

Airplanes, eh, there's sound enough physics behind those that I have explored, so they don't amaze me anymore.

Oh, also, how Ashlee Simpson has a career amazes me as well.

Mr. Ron Mexico is on vacation this week so he might not comment by noon Friday but fear not, his lack of presence does not speak of his love for you.

For me its computers when first invented. I want to know who the person was who said "I got an idea. I intend to make a electronic chip and then make other chips and have wire connect to the chips. And once that is done we will be able to save information on it".

I was also awed when I first saw the car crashes into another car effect in Adaptation. Though now it doesn't awe me because it been redone too much.

Oh also the fact people think Christopher Columbus proved the earth round and that subliminal messages are real also awes me, but in a bad way.

in total honesty, the phonetic alphabet. how someone could create could create written characters to represent sounds in the spoken words pretty amazing.

that psychological trick you can play on yourself with simple repetition.

if you say a word too many times, it "sounds weird"

if you look at it or spell it for too long it "looks weird"

YES!!!!!!! You are my new favorite poster. What CD do you like better...inverted world or chutes?

As for the OP...love amazes me...how we are all born as individuals but know that there is one person out there somewhere for us...and you think you meet them but its not them...then you think you'll never meet them...and when you do you know it the second it happens.

Now that you all have finished gagging....

Also microwaves.

Also how people can write computer programs.

Also ham.

Me too man. Seriously, I understand how they could play certain notes, but I don't get how they can recreate unique sounds like they do.

I know this question wasn't for me, but I feel compelled to answer.

By a narrow margin, I'm saying Chutes Too Narrow.

Pretty much anything amazes me if I think about it long enough. I think the most amazing things occur in nature.

For instance, how a tiny seed grows into a gigantic tree simply by soaking up nutrients and water from the soil, and absorbing light.

Also, when it is pouring rain. Think about how amazing it is that all that water was just floating in the air, gathering together, and then in cetain conditions, it collects and falls back to the earth.

What about the fact that we are all on a rock that is circling a star in infinite blackness.

Or that ants have heads the size of a pin, but they organize themselves into extremely intricate societies working toward a common goal.

Also, language is crazy if you really think about it, and words, text. The fact that you are reading something I wrote on my living room couch in San Diego, without coming into contact with me, yet by looking at some symbols being represented by points of light on a screen, you can understand exactly what I am thinking.

OK, I could go on for a while, I'm done for now.

not invented by anybody (religion forum is that way <----) but pretty darn crazy to me.

doesn't it mess with your mind that these phonetic characters are spelled using the very same characters? Lol

Also, it's pretty f**king awesome that this is actually a picture of real deep sea life - not a computer image!

damn. that was my answer. i guess i am pretty in awe of some drugs. i think it is totally crazy/awesome that someone figured out how to take coca plants and make it into a sniffable powder that is fun for the whole family

The way some people get really lucky at poker, donk their way into money and, somehow, keep that horseshoe lodged up their pooper long enough to believe they're good.

The modern system of wires. Think about it, right now you could follow a wire coming out of my computer through miles and miles of wires and it would eventually lead to every one of your computers. Between power, telephone, cable wires there is an unfathomable amount of wires that somehow link every house and pretty much every room in the country together. I guess that's impressive.

Child birth. Most of you are probably too young to think about this yet. But I have 3 kids so to me . . . it's cool cool.gif . From conception to the actual birth . . . just really cool to think about.

That's called Hyperpanny and it's a funny word to look at a million times over too. You can also do it with yourself if you stare at yourself in a mirror for an extended period of time.

Yeah, holy crap. "We can ice the cake with it!"

Things by which the Shimmering Wang is awestruck:

1) David Hasselhoff, especially his UNREAL popularity in Germany

2) The power of the human mind to subconciously and unconciously make connections and recognize patterns. I'm not a very instinctual person, but I still KNOW things I have no business knowing, only because some part of my brain instantly drew some perfect conclusion from information I didn't even know I had.

3) Eidetic memories.

4) The myriad ways humans have invented/discovered to just get completely fucked up. "Hmm... I've deduced that if I eat these poisonous mushrooms, my body will start going crazy trying to fight off the perceived 'infection' and I'll trip balls. Holy crap, that Back to the Future poster is, like, totally on fire!"

5) Humor. The more I think about the idea of "funny," and the many things that people find amusing, the more just... amazing it is to me. The combination of shared experience, odd juxtaposition, absurdity, and situational buffoonery that can generate such a visceral and often COMMON reaction among people and peoples is... it's awesome to me.

5a) Somehow, there's a small population of people that think the stupid things I say are amusing. "How can you enjoy this? It's just incredibly stupid. Nobody is supposed to think this is funny... stop it. STOP LAUGHING!!"

I have more, too.

Her and her sister's boobs amaze me more. Great rack in that family.

On a serious note, things that amaze me.....
1) Skyscrapers- When you go downtown to a big city(Chicago in my case), pretty amazing that people could build such big buildings like the Sears Tower.

2) Telescopes- Specifically the Hubble, pretty amazing that a giant telescope can see something as far away as Pluto but enhance it to make it look so close and real.

3) Satellites- Really crazy to think about how satellites run everything like television, radio and phones.

4) Space in general really amazes me since it is so big and nothing in this world is nothing more than a spec to the whole universe.
