Since no one has done it yet, I figured I'd get this going.
Let's talk about the Cards, and pray that we don't donk out of the playoffs AGAIN.

I'm feeling good about making it to the World Series. They're winning games early this year on the strength of Pujols alone. I gotta believe at some point the rest of the guys will start hitting, and I trust Jocketty to make a move near the deadline to get a bat. Definitely don't want to see us donk out again.
Oh, good thing we're not in the AL, because according to KowboyKoop we would have "no shot in hell" of making the playoffs.

It's true, it's true.
Also, awesome that you already feel confident about getting to the World Series...when the Mets (and even the Reds) have looked much more powerful thus far. Mets pitching has been pretty good with Pedro and 90's version Glavine.

Reds just swept the Cards. Cards bullpen is shaky. They did have a pretty watered down lineup this game though, so can't read too much into it.

That was our B er...C team today. I'm not sure what was going on. The fact that we almost won the game is pretty pathetic. Ponson continues to look like he's got things together.

The Cards suck and the Cubs rule.

Unlike most Cub fans I don't hate the Cardinals. Every single baseball game I went to growing up was at Busch Stadium and I hell of a lot of respect for the Cardinals and their history. You can expect legitimate comments out of me on here.

So St. Louis loses another one to Houston that wouldn't have even been a close one had it not been for Pujols.
What seems to be the trouble?

yes, had you told me at the beginning of the season I would utter those words I probably would have cried, thinking that meant we were gonna finish in last. But I don't think any team with Pujols playing everyday could ever finish in last, so I don't have to worry about that. The rest of the guys have been up and down, but Ponson has been pretty steady. He's not dominant or anything, just been kind of Suppan-like this year.

And yes, I'm very concerned about Pujols back pain. If he goes down, we're not going anywhere near the playoffs. However, I'm pretty confident in his ability to play through pain (see the planter fascitis (sp?) from all last season).

Isn't the ability to strand inherited runners the most crucial aspect of relief pitching?
Solodell
Thursday, June 1st, 2006, 6:03 PM
It's a big part, but being able to get guys out for multiple innings is important too. Playoff time is probably where inherited runners become more crucial, since managers aren't quite as likely to let a guy battle throw, since they don't usually need to preserve the bullpen (enough off days to make up for it).

Wednesday, June 7th, 2006, 3:13 PM
things are not good. Pujols out probably like 4-6 weeks. Izzy is having SERIOUS control issues, like, more walks than strikeouts serious. Mulder has been pathetic last 3 outings, Suppan and Marquis aren't pitching well, Carp and Ponson just back from DL, Edmonds should probably be on DL, Bigbie (not a big player, but a good PH guy) out with an umbilical(?!) hernia. I'm just glad it's the Reds and not the Astros that are going to pass us first, cause I doni't think they have the pitching to go a huge run and get way out ahead of us until Pujols gets back and the managements trades one of our SP so Tony will have to give Reyes a spot and leave him there (since he's probably our 2nd best pitcher, but stuck in AAA right now).
Let's just say I think we might be able to beat the Royals if we played them now, but I wouldn't be placing any money on the deal.
Solodell
Wednesday, June 14th, 2006, 3:38 PM
and looks like Carpenter is back pitching well again after his DL stint, and Rolen is simply tearing it up (leads league in hitting as I write this), and Pujols is feeling better and should be back closer to the 4 weeks than 6. Oh, and Cincinnati gave us a gift horse by losing 5 straight after they swept us, lead back up to 3!

well, thank you AL Central leaders for beating our brains in and exposing the many glaring weaknesses of our team. Cleveland and Minnesota aren't walks in the park! Either one of them would probably win this division too.
I'm just hoping this turns out to be the worst week of the season for the Cards.

No, Cleveland and Minnesota aren't walks in the park either...but I wouldn't go so far as to say they'd win the NL Central. They'd both be winning teams in the NL most likely, but I'd definitely put St. Louis ahead of them. The Cards are just in a funk at a bad time, that's all. Once they snap out of it they'll be back to whipping up on Houston and whoever else is (or won't) make a run at them in the Central. Royals play Cincy next..perhaps we'll help you Cards out in the Central.

just venting some frustration. It's really been over 2 seasons since we've dealt with any prolonged struggles like this.
