So we've talked about the existence of Jesus, God, and natural science in the forum. The one concept we haven't talked about is the Holy Spirit. Most Christians believe that the Old Testament saints communicated with God himself, the New Testament Christians had Jesus, and after Jesus ascended until right now we have the Holy Spirit. Here is what the NIV Bible has to say about the Holy Spirit.
Jesus promises the coming of the Holy Spirit in John 14:15-17:"If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever-the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you."...verse 26 says, "But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you."
In John 16:7-15, Jesus talks about what the Holy Spirit will do when he gets here:"But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgement: in regard to sin because men do not believe in me; in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and in regard to judgement, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak own his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you."
In Acts 2 the Holy Spirit comes, as Jesus promised, at Pentecost: 2-4,"Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them." Now after this happened people came running to the house to see what was happening. Peter, enabled by the Holy Spirit, preached a sermon and Acts 2:41 says, "Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day."
The Holy Spirit still operates, I believe, in this way today. He comes to rest inside the soul of a person once they accept Christ. Some think when you are baptized with the Holy Spirit you will speak in tongues, I think speaking in tongues is a gift of the Spirit, but not all will have that gift. All, however, will feel convicted when they sin, and all will be able to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit guiding them through their everyday lives. This might not be an audible sound, but more of a feeling of peace or angst when the Holy Spirit speaks.
I also believe the Holy Spirit manifests himself thru Christians when acts of healing are performed. Miracles of physical healing still happen in a lot of American churches, but more so in more primitive cultures like in Africa when sin is not running as rampant. Emotional healing happens nearly every week in my church because of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus often referred to the Holy Spirit as "the Counselor." This is the Holy Spirit's most important job in my opinion. It is he who consoles and comforts me and other Christians when the rough times hit. It's his counselor aspect that enables Christians to still be happy and joyful thru financial troubles, losing loved ones, and the other things that cause depression in people.
The Holy Spirit is the ultimate proof, to me, for Christianity. The sad thing is to receive him you must first receive Christ. That is the part that most non-believers have a hard time doing. God Bless you, guys. If any you have any questions that would best be discussed over the phone. PM me and I'll try to get in touch with you. Jesus loves you.
