What does everybody think about this?

http://www.cnn.com/2006/LAW/04/20/immigration.raids/index.html

My first impression is just that I'm glad they first went after companies that are specifically importing immigrants to work, and that received prior warning.
Farnan
They should go after ALL companies that hire illegals.

I think this is the best way to stem the tide. No more jobs, no more illegals.

Great plan. Now who's going to pick up the slack in the workforce, and are you prepared to pay $20/lb for apples?

Yeah, this is a great idea. Glad to see you have a fundamentally sound grasp of the "cut off your nose to spite your face" theory of economics.
DonkSlayer
My point here was "illegals", not "cheap labor".

We should just make sure they get documented; build another Ellis Island building in El Paso or something.

They'll still be willling to work for $7.50 an hour and live more to an apt than we would to a house.

Plus, better national security, less money out of our pockets to support them.

Look we're paying $20/lb for those apples already, just making up the difference in taxes. A study just came out that in New Mexico, the ratio to economic contribution/tax consumption of the mexican immigrants is something like 1/3.

Hmmm. I thought they hit up a manufacturer of wooden skids. And i HIGHLY doubt prices would jump that much. Besides, i'm not saying they shouldn't be able to work here. I'm saying they shouldn't be able to work here illegally.

Here's an article discussing the impact on prices of fruits and vegetables if we eliminated illegal workers.

MR. PRESIDENT, I'M HEADED TO MEXICO

David M. Bresnahan April 1, 2006 NewsWithViews.com

Dear President Bush:

I'm about to plan a little trip with my family and extended family,
And I would like to ask you to assist me. I'm going to walk across the
Border from the U.S. Into Mexico, and I need to make a few
arrangements. I know you can help with this.

I plan to skip all the legal stuff like visas, passports, immigration
Quotas and laws. I'm sure they handle those things the same way you do
Here.

So, would you mind telling your buddy, President Vicente Fox, that I'm
On my way over? Please let him know that I will be expecting the
Following:

1. Free medical care for my entire family.

2. English-speaking government bureaucrats for all services I might
Need, whether I use them or not.

3. All government forms need to be printed in English.

4. I want my kids to be taught by English-speaking teachers.

5. Schools need to include classes on American culture and history.

6. I want my kids to see the American flag flying on the top of the
Flag pole at their school with the Mexican flag flying lower down.

7. Please plan to feed my kids at school for both breakfast and lunch.

8. I will need a local Mexican driver's license so I can get easy
Access to government services.

9. I do not plan to have any car insurance, and I won't make any
Effort to learn local traffic laws.

10. In case one of the Mexican police officers does not get the memo
From Pres. Fox to leave me alone, please be sure that all police
Officers speak English.

11. I plan to fly the U.S. Flag from my house top, put flag decals on
My car, and have a gigantic celebration on July 4th. I do not want any
Complaints or negative comments from the locals.

12. I would also like to have a nice job without paying any taxes, and
don't enforce any labor laws or tax laws.

13. Please tell all the people in the country to be extremely nice and
Never say a critical word about me, or about the strain I might place
On the economy.

I know this is an easy request because you already do all these things
For all the people who come to the U.S. From Mexico. I am sure that
Pres. Fox won't mind returning the favor if you ask him nicely.

However, if he gives you any trouble, just invite him to go quail
Hunting with your V.P.

Thank you so much for your kind help.

Sincerely,

David M. Bresnahan

But they won't. They like the welfare. Many of the illegal workers here do just that, Work! There isn't going to be a mass hiring of "white trash" ,as you put it, into the the jobs vacated by the illegal workers.

I don't know the solution, but not letting the people from Mexico come here seems silly.

I agree, considering the fact that around 98% of the population of the USA is a result of immigration...a lot of which wasn't legal (and I'm not just talking about the Mexicans either). It is extremely silly. The lack of jobs isn't because illegals are coming across the border and taking them from us...it's because of corporate outsourcing and an inept moron in the White House. The immigrants are working jobs that most Americans don't want to do.
HtotheNootch
It's about friggin' time something's getting done about this. At a time when the rights of U.S. citizens are at an all-time low, there are people talking about letting people come into this country and/or remain here without a single check into their backgrounds?

not really--this isn't a 6% across the board jump. It is select items only. It isn't like it is a jump in gas prices that has widespread impact across the entire economy. We're talking about fruit and vegetables.

Point being--the guy who said we're going to pay some insane price for apples is off base. A lot of people have this unfounded belief that we'd be paying 10 bucks for a watermellon if we don't allow illegal workers.
