The Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals renewed their over 100 year old rivalry today with the Cubs taking the first game 5-1. Despite the fact that the Cardinals won the NL Central, the Cubs won the season series last year...little consolation for sucking last year. I live for these games.

uh no

not the greatest rivalry in baseball

red sox yankees is by a mile

when was the last cubs/cardinals fight?

the yanks and sox actually hate each other, its not just the fans that hate each other
KowboyKoop
Both rivalries suck.

Cards-Cubs.......don't really sense any "hatred" there....just seems like any other game to me.

Yanks-Sox......the fact that ESPN has forced this down the entire country's throat ALL YEAR EVERY SINGLE YEAR has ruined it for me. Yeah..they hate each other......but I think it's been killed by overexposure. I have zero interest in their games.......so....give me White Sox/Indians right now.

Fights do not a great rivalry make, else the Sox-Devil Rays is what you'd be hearing about.

The Yankees and Sox players don't hate each other. The used to in say the 70's, but not really anymore.

Still, there's nothing like Yankees-Sox.

Reminds me of what happened when my grandfather saw me wearing a Yankees hat when I was six. I was shocked by his angry response. I don't know how I got the hat, but I wore it because I'd recently read a Mickey Mantle biography and found that he was a kickass ballplayer and we shared the same birthday. The hat was eventually left out in the rain until it rotted.

The Yankees and Red Sox are only considered a great rivalry because ESPN says so. It has everything to do with the vast majority of the employees being from New York and Massachusetts. Watching the Yanks and Red Sox rivalry is like watching two rich women get into a slap fight with each other, while arguing over who broke who's nail.

Also when was the last fight between the Cards and Cubs? You obviously don't watch the games then. There were numerous ones last year with it getting to the point that the umps were warning each bench before the games even started.

Teams don't hate other teams. Just look at how many Yankee players have come to the Red Sox and vice versa.

Also, Dodgers-Giants warrants mentioning.

Cubs-Cards is definitely not the greatest rivalry.. Yanks-Red Sox will always be it.. right behind the D-Rays-Royals rivalry

I think you have picked the wrong day to be making Royals cracks. Have you enjoyed your taste of Burgos so far? Do you wish to never experience Burgos again?? Oh man....I know those back to back 97 mph strike three's right at the knees on the outside corner were pretty devastating to you guys. Did you enjoy your shot of Sweeney? I know we've enjoyed our Jon Garland and Cliff Pollite the past couple days..lol. Good luck trying to salvage one game this series.

Edit: Just heard this stat....last eight games in Kansas City..ChiSox are 2-6..lol.

Thank you for reminding me of what a horrible start Garland put up for my fantasy team, like 80% of the rest of my staff. I will now proceed to kill myself by sitting in the first base side stands and getting nailed in the head by a Chuck Knoblauch throw.

Since ESPN overhypes the Yanks/Red Sox rivalry so much, it's probably the 'biggest' one in baseball. But greatest? I still go with Dodgers/Giants. And with those two teams the only ones seriously contending in the NL West (yeah yeah, the Padres. We'll see), it should make for an interesting season.

I actually skipped over Hudson in favor of Zack Duke in my draft, so fortunately I don't have that same problem. However, I can't even get a reliable performance out of my No. 1 guy, Oswalt (a not-great-but-not-terrible 5 runs in 6+ today), so this week is pretty much shot. Sheets being hurt doesn't help much either.

Ah well.

Game on National Television tonight...ESPN.
Solodell
I'll say I agree with Cards vs Cubs...but I'm obviously biased. It's more about who you root for though. ESPN does shove Yanks/Sox down our throat, similar to Duke/UNC in basketball. It's disgusting.

Juan Pierre just got screwed big-time on that check-swing call......that wasn't even CLOSE.
Yoda
Sox & Yanks by several miles...these guys threw at each other in SPRING TRAINING. And the sox coming back from 3-0 and going on to win series only locked it up as the best rivalry ever

that's true for alot of things IMO, but 100 years have nicely refined what people can reasonably expect to be called.
i think it was the wrong call, but missing a check-swing call is rarely a game-changing decision.

Jesus..even the supposed "NL power" are looking kind of crappy. They are still a good team...but it's clear they aren't as good as they were last year..they just lost too much and didn't add enough. Is there ONE "great" team in the NL this year...or is it seriously this weaK?? I know it's early....but I don't see one team in the National League that would even MAKE the playoffs if they were in the opposite division in the AL.....

Well....for the past 87 years before the BoSox won the World Series...it actually wasn't much of a "rivarly" really...because Boston NEVER won. Not one time. Never. It was ALWAYS the Yankees who won the championship in their rivalry. Never the Red Sox. I think that if you are going to have the "greatest" rivalry, it can't be 100% one-sided. Hell, the BoSox can't even win the division from New York. I think arguments can be made for other rivalries pretty well.

Whens the last time the Giants or Dodgers made the playoffs?

Hell, whens the last time the Cubs or Cards won a world series? How can you have a rivalry when these teams never win a world series???

Not to mention that the Red Sox and Yankees are the two best teams in the American League and usually baseball every season.

Well, for one....I wasn't giving an answer for sure...I was just saying that arguments can be made against the Boston/NY rivalry and for the other rivalries. I don't really think any of the classic "rivalries" are all that great.

Also, as for your last statement...the RedSox and Yankees aer NOT the 'two best teams in the AL and usually baseball every season.'

Last year, The White Sox and the Angels were both better teams, and probably the Cardinals last year as well. The previous year, the BoSox were the best team. Before that, however, there were a number of years since the Yanks won the title. You need to broaden your baseball horizons outside of just Boston and New York. Boston won ONE time, and New York hasn't won since 2000. Since 2000....New York and Boston have not been the "best teams" every year.

Just because ESPN puts Boston and New York on TV the most doesn't make them the two best teams. You should learn to realize this.

Also, I'd like to show how this logic is retarded. You are saying the Cubs/Cards "rivalry" is nonexistant because they haven't won a World Series in a while. Thus, by this EXACT same logic, the Boston/New York "rivalry" is not even a rivalry because before 2004, the Red Sox hadn't won a World Series in nearly 100 years. Thus, you are saying that the Boston and New York hasn't even BEEN a rivalry since the 2004 season...and I refuse to acknowledge a two year rivalry as the "greatest rivalry in baseball."

See how a little thinking gets the job done? Quit being such a homer.

No.

I think that about covers it.
The Nuts
Then you didn't attend any of the World Series games between the Mets/Yankees. That was an experience I won't forget.

The thing that may prevent it from being such is that it isn't really universal. Games between the two teams only matters to fans of them. When the Yankees/Red Sox play, something is generally on the line like a trip to the World Series or first place in the AL East.

Yanks/Sox are the big rivalry right now. Playoffs, fights, war of words..(although since Pedro left I feel it's gotten less nasty). When the Cards/Cubs start duking it out in the playoffs every year then that rivalry will get more attention. Baseball needs more good rivalry's.

it's only big because ESPN and the rest of the media says it is

The fact of the matter is if the media shoved Braves/Mets down our throats the way the do with the Yankees/Red Sox then Braves/Mets would be considered #1, same with any other rivalry in baseball...period.

I'm a huge cub fan... the rivalry between the cardinals and cubs, while doesn't get the national hype, is better and storied . I think rivalries are measured better between fan base hate, than champion ships.

THat being said, Red Sox/Yankees is the most bitter rivalry in ( American) professional sports.

College rivalries always will be better than pro, however

But the same intensity isn't there. Before weighing in on this, I asked my friend who lived in St. Louis what his take was. He agreed with me that it was Sox-Yankees, then Giants-Dodgers, and after that is a huge drop-off.

I know that, but the history isn't as intense. The Red Sox were a dynasty, but once they traded Ruth they never could compete with the Yankees. The Yankees got the man who was baseball and the Cardinals didn't.
