Hey, Im pretty tired of playing lhe..since its rigged. So I wanna give NL a try. I just have no idea what no limit cash is all about. I jumped into a 3/6 nl game yesterday and got pretty much crushed, not cuz the other players were THAT great, but mainly because I suck pretty bad.

Since I only really played NL tourneys, I found myself trying to win every pot, trying to make "good calls" with mid pair or whatever and bluffing WAY too much. I know, I gotta fix that but a few guidelines would help me, like are continuation bets AS important? Are big huge bluffs even necisarry? etc...

I also have a problem knowing what marginal/strong hands are usually good to go all the way with in NL cash, for instance TPTK over pairs, etc.

meh, vague question huh? I guess I dont really know EXACTLY what to ask, Im just looking for some general guidelines or differences between tourneys and cash that I can keep in mind while Im playing. Im pretty sure once I get the general feel for the game down I will be able to do okay, so some "tips" to keep in mind would help a ton.

thanks

ps I plan on playing more 6 handed since playing ring is I like it much more.

ChuckSty has been extremely successful playing NLHE 6-max games. He put an article up on CZPoker which gives a lot of good insight regarding strategy for opening or calling pre-flop. I'd suggest giving it a read.

Tournament mentality is detrimental to a cash game player. I know this, because I'm a crappy cash game player and a formitable MTT/STT/HU player.

You have to make HUGE laydowns in cash games and realize that there is absolutely no sense of urgency. The blinds aren't going up, you don't need to jockey for position, you just need to make smart plays.

I know you just got your hands on a ton of dough, but starting at 3/6 (which you can afford) is kind of like picking up a baseball glove and a ball, and pitching a game for a AAA team. It ain't the pros, but it ain't Little League either.

It might be an ego blow, but go fish out the 0.5/1 NL table. If you can't make money there, there's about a 99.999% chance you can't make money at 3/6. If you're going to pay for your education, why not make it cheap?

Also, starting hand requirements are completely different than tournies. Limping UTG becomes acceptable in certain situations. So does playing 65 sooooted to a marginal raise (works best in position).

I'd also suggest starting out at .50/1 or 1/2. I've notice a bit of a change once it gets to 2/4. The key to the game is patience. Like MLJ said, there's no urgency like in tournaments. You're mostly trying to find fish and wait them out.

I don't worry too much about trying to make thin call downs. They're fun to make every now and then, but they're not super necessary at lower limits. Also, when you bluff, there's often a decent amount of preparation that goes into it. You'll sit with the same people at a cash table longer than you will people at an MTT table, so I think image and reads become more important.
