I currently play on Party Poker and have been having a lot of success lately with MTTs. I generally play MTTs with buy-ins from $10-$30 and have been dong extremely as of late.

I am interested in "satelliting" (verb?) into some of the larger buy-in ($250+) tourneys on Party. What is the best way to do this?

I see that they offer both SnGs and MTTs. I have never played a SnG with a buy-in larger than $20 and was wondering if the play is any different as the buy-ins to the SnGs increase? At what level is the play alot different than the lower buy-ins?

Also, if you are successful in satelliting nto one of the larger tourneys, must you enter the next time the tourney is running or can you choose any tourney? (ie. if you satellite into the Sunday Quarter Million, must you enter that Sunday, or can you choose any Sunday?)

SNG Satellites play out extremely different than a normal SNG does, because first is the only place that matters. Looser play (and it's already pretty loose) is very common in these things, and you'll have to be shovin in with a 40% of a 60-40 too often for these to be consistent. I've never liked em much, but i have friends that swear by them.

If I do satellite it's through the Multitable Sats, as they generally pay out about the same, or a little less, than making the money in a standard MTT: It's a lot more like just trying to stick it out ot break even in the sit n go's.

I really dont have a whole lot of advice to offer here as far as changing strategey and what not, only that I know play tends to be looser in both of those tournaments.

On Party, should you win an entry into, say, a weekly special tournament. You are automatically registered for the next one to start, but you can unregister if you'd like: this gives you a freeroll for the exact same type of tournament, not anything like the $W on stars. If you qualify for a Sunday tournament, you have to play a Sunday tournament: you can't play it's saturday sister with the same buyin.

GL to you in these!

Edit: that was a bit unclear when I read it: If you won a "Weekday special" Satellite that actually allows you to registed with that freeroll for any of the "xDay Special" tournaments. It's the Guarnteed touranments that you are locked into one specific day and tournament. I also dont know how long they are good for.

So I'll preface everything by saying that I play on Stars, so I'm not exactly sure about the technicalities of the PP satellites...I do know that on Stars if you win your way into, say, the big sunday tourney, you can choose to play then or have the money refunded in T$ back into your account for use at a different tourney.

Now as to satellite strategy, the first thing I would tell you to do if you are considering MTT satellites (which I recommend) is to read the thread we had on satellites not too long ago. In it there is some absolutely priceless advice about how to play satellites, particularly the closing stages. If you understand how to play that, I have no doubt that you will be a successful satellite player, simply because so few other people do. I used to be one of those who had no clue about strat at the end of an MTT satellite - after having read that thread and actually had someone walk me through each stage, I now am amazed by some of the stuff people do.

In terms of one table satellites, the play you encounter there will probably be a little bit better than at other tournaments at the same buyin. Mainly because the people trying to qualify for a bigger buyin tend to be a little bit better than those who are just playing 10-20 dollar tourneys.

The reason that I recommend MTTs over STT satellites is because of the steepness of the payout structure. For me, its a lot easier to finish in the top 18 out of a 110 person field than it is to finish 1st out of a 10 person field. I remember I was once down to the final two in a satellite paying one ticket to the Bahamas WPT, worth 12k total...despite having a 3-1 chip lead and AA vs 46 I still lost that, and got the consolation prize of 600 dollars. When I realised that on the last hand I had just coin flipped for $12k....well, it took me a while to fall asleep that night.

For me, the bottom line is that in order to come in first in a tourney, you need a good deal of luck. In order to come in the top 10% or so...you need to not get unlucky, and have a good concept of satellite strategy. MTT satellites that award 1 seat per 6-10 players is the way I would recommend going - its far more consistent than the STT route, though I'm sure there are some players whose playing style would be a better fit with STT satellites.
