Pink Floyd

Floyd...what am I missing? I still don't get it. I find the instrumentals unpleasant, the lyrics trite and annoying, and the songs in general dated and sickening. I'm sure radio saturation is at play here too, but I still don't get it. Is there some kind of historical context I'm missing? MK? Help me out.

i'm not the biggest fan. i think a lot of the post-barrett songs are boring, but the incredible production on everything from dark side of the moon on makes it worthwhile imo.

Dutch re: Beatles; U2; Pink Floyd; etc.

I had a rather brief and extremely shallow love-affair with The Beatles about four or five years ago, which mostly revolved around over-playing 1 and The White Album, but never really got far beyond that, because I'd already heard enough of their joints on the radio, ad nauseum, that it kinda' took the punch out of it, and mostly sapped my will to explore too extensively.

This isn't to say that the effect of impact sterilization through the overplay of out-of-context Beatles songs isn't still largely present, for me, but Jesus, there's a lot of Merlin shit in that catalog. Abby Road, Rubber Soul and Sgt. Pepper's are all beyond bumpin'.

U2

I've stated pretty repeatedly that I hate U2, and find them to be incomprehensibly boring and overrated. That being said, I probably until yesterday never gave their more respected work a fair listen. So I downloaded Joshua Tree, and got high...

Well, there were still shaky parts that bored me, but there were other parts that captivated me. I'm by no means a U2 fan, now, but I can understand their appeal.

Pink Floyd

Floyd...what am I missing? I still don't get it. I find the instrumentals unpleasant, the lyrics trite and annoying, and the songs in general dated and sickening. Wow this sounds exactly like me
I fell in love with the Beatles a few years ago (obv too young to have heard them back in the day) I downloaded a complete collection but all the songs were unnamed, so I named some of the albums manually but it just became a pain in the ass so all i had named were some different greatest hits collections (1, 67-72 or w/e it is, and i had sgt pepper) all the other albums i named when i named them they got put in alphabetical order not song order and it just frustrated me so last week i downloaded another complete collection w/ everything named right. Its awsome.

IMO U2's music mostly all sounds the same. Not always a bad thing. I dont hate it but dont love it.
I dont like Floyd @ all except for Comfortably Numb and Another Brick in the Wall, I dont find anything too good with them.

But my fav. music right now is Led Zeppelin and the Beatles. Im really hoping Zeppelin goes on a tour, I want to see them soooo bad.

But back to the original statement of the thread, Ive been listening to my beatles albums with the songs in the right order
Dirtydutch
eYank, any interest in listening to some somewhat indie tunes? When I was pretty much where you are I felt pretty cramped, and was really sick of the same stuff over and over, at which point Wang offered me the red pill or the blue pill, eventually turning me into the condescending sudo-hipster you know today.

If you haven't heard it yet, grab Radiohead's The Bends, and proceed to delete your best of BTO collection.

I love Pink Floyd. They are absolutely amazing to listen to, but you have to be in a mood for some of their music. Very few bands have a run on albums like Meddle, Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall. Those are 5 great albums. Their stuff with Syd Barrett is really kinda out there. But there's some good stuff. And by out there I mean Arnold Layne is about a guy who likes to sniff ladies panties.

I'm listening to a Led Zeppelin concert March 27th 1970 in Los Angeles.

I just picked up the National's first two albums: Their self-titled debut and Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers. Not as polished as their later stuff but still worth picking up. I just discovered The National after hearing all the acclaim for Boxer and they are quickly becoming one of my favorite bands.

This is one of those threads I check every now and then but have never posted in so forgive me if you guys all know this. Erik (DDIDM) turned me on to a site called pandora.com. Its a free site where you can enter an artist and it will play not only songs from that artist but also artists from the same genre. You can skip thru songs by "dislike". Do no use the skip button because it only lets you skip so many per hour.
Its great for checking out new bands you have never heard of very quickly. I've also found bands I never would have known about if it wasn't for this site.
Again, sorry if this is common knowledge for some of you music buffs, but i thought I would throw it out there.

Yeah, I'm way ups into Ricky, 'yo.

Also, as my original Hold Steady guy, are you into Lifter Puller at all? Pitchfork told me it was bad, so I was expecting the worst, but I'm really liking a lot of it, with recognition that it's almost solely because I like Hold Steady so much.

Wow, I'm also staying up all night. I'm so screwed.

When I come on to post around 6-7am EST, I'm just getting back from back-room poker games, generally, or I'm just still up. I go to bed around noon, if I don't have anything to do, so when I do, I just stay up a little longer. But now I have jury duty, which means I'm going to have to stay up all through the night, then I may have to maintain a human schedule for a week or so. It's already starting to suck; I hope my outrageous lies about have to work at the orphanage don't seem to contrived, and I sure hope my amorality, enjoyment of irony, and of course my sarcasm -- I hope those things aren't sought-after criteria in an unpaid cog of justice. Well, the good news is that I was gracefully released from my duties as an unwilling public servant. The bad news:

Remember how Dutch didn't used to like the government? Well, he was wrong. He must have loved the government, because the level of hate I now feel can only exist in contrast to love: those mother-****ers stole my iPod. They stole my iPod. They said I couldn't bring it in, they told me to leave it with them, they gave me no form or anything, and now nobody knows anything. Mother-****ing ****ing ****.
