Cee-Lo Green... is the Soul Machine.
Also, I've been enjoying a pile of OST, including Juno.
Good movie, excellent soundtrack.
Speaking of soundtracks, on mk's praise, I picked up Jonny Greenwood's score to There Will Be Blood. I think I wanna see the movie before I listen to it though.
Here's my mix of favorite songs from 2007. The rules were to create one CD worth of songs, limited to one song per artist/album, so there are a lot of worthy songs left off. Also, I didn't listen to Strawberry Jam or Person Pitch, as well as a slew of other records that have been highly praised (From Here We Go To Sublime, for example), or a lot of records that came out later in the year. I did recently pick up all the above mentioned albums though, and I'm looking forward to checking them out.
LVPro's Top Songs Of 2007:
All My Friends - LCD Soundsystem (from Sound of Silver)I know everybody loved this song, and it was on everybody's top 10 list, so it's cliche, but
fuck it, it's a great, great, great song.
Weird Fishes/Arpeggi - Radiohead (from In Rainbows)Hard to pick just one song from this album, but I think I made a good choice. It's hard to make a bad one, though. The runner-up was probably All I Need.
My Rights Versus Yours - The New Pornographers (from Challengers)A pretty solid representation of what The New Pornos are all about, I think, and one of the catchiest tunes of the year.
Us Placers - CRS [Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, and Pharrell] (from the Can't Tell Me Nothin' mixtape)A hip-hop song that features two of my favorite hip-hop artists, and samples Thom Yorke. Seems like just an excuse to get more Yorke on the mix, but it's really a pretty quality ditty.
Desire - Pharoahe Monch (from Desire)One of the more overlooked albums from this year, I think.
Rain - Bishop Allen (from Bishop Allen & The Broken String)A pretty up-lifting, head-bobbing song. Since I live in Seattle, where it rains 300 days a fu
cking year, it makes me feel slightly better when I'm walking in the rain and this one pops up on my iPod.
Leave Your Name - R. Kelly (from Double Up)Easily the funniest album of the year, in my estimation. R. Kelly is a under appreciated pop genius. This song is his answering machine message, and it basically boils down to him telling you that he'd be happy to answer the phone, but he's likely "smoking some trees" or "having a little sex" and is thus too busy to speak to you.
Four Winds - Bright Eyes (from Cassadaga)I probably only like this song because every time I hear it, I think of the hoedown scene from Back To The Future, Part III.
Plus Ones - Okkervil River (from The Stage Names)Another extremely difficult album to pick a favorite from.
Tablespoon Of Codeine - John Vanderslice (from Emerald City)Kind of a trippy song that, as best I can tell, is about fighting addiction. The Slicer also puts on one hell of a live show.
If You Got The Money - Jamie T (from Panic Prevention)To me, Jamie T is everything I wished Mike Skinner was. Clever, a bit different, but with enough pop sensibility to put together a good hip-hop tune. I'm not running down The Streets, but I prefer Jamie T.
Finer Feelings - Spoon (from Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga)A song that makes me want to dance around the room like a goddamn mental patient. I love this song.
Still Got Love - Blue Scholars (from Bayani)My vote for song of the year. Sabzi (DJ for Blue Scholar and Common Market) does the soul sample thing as well or better than anybody in hip-hop today, but I don't think very many people outside of the Pacific Northwest know it. I also really dig the whole socially-conscious hip-hop thing, and this song (and album, and group, for that matter) embodies it as well as anybody. I'm pretty sure KRS-One is a fan.
Impossible Germany - Wilco (from Sky Blue Sky)Call it "dad rock" if you want, but I think Sky Blue Sky was one of the most kickass, fun to listen to records of 2007. Jeff Tweedy + just enough guitar wankery = a fun listen, if nothing else. It's indulgent... but not too indulgent.
For the record, I listened to Camera Obscura's
Let's Get Out Of This Country while I wrote this list.
