Man, mk, I think I'm uniquely positioned to enjoy this, because I haven't heard almost 50% of these bands, really. This is really awesome, as is LLY's. I'm going to try to get all these albums, now.

Shipping MK's 80s mix... now.

Also, I'm demanding, on or before Jan 10th., a mixtape entitled "The Best of 2007." From each of you. MK, LLY, Dutch, all of you clowns.

The Best of 2007. IF you wish, you can make one for a specific genre (The Best of Rap, The Best of Dubstep, The Best of Blah).

Go.

I'll be interested in hearing these too since I don't recall much coming out this year I've liked, but I don't pay as much attention to music as I used to.

If I can ever get time to sit down and give it the time it deserves, I will certainly knock one of these out. 2007 has been a great, great effing year for music, personally.
Dirtydutch
Anyone hear a record called Exodus Into Unheard Rhythms, by Oh No? He's apparently Madlib's brother, and this record is really cool.
Dirtydutch
Hmmm...I'll certainly give the Best-of List a try, but it's all pretty muddy right now; I have no clue what's from this year; I've easily heard more than 100 times as much music this year as I have in the other 20 years of my life combined.

"Remember me? Clean Timbs with an emeryboard/ I only came to save the game like a memory card."

Vaudeville Villain.

Also, and their are a handful of songs that I'm obsessed with, that to me have a similar electronic/rock feel, like Gash (Flaming Lips), Stay Don't Go (Spoon), some Wilco stuff, etc (I leave out Radiohead, though in theory I suppose they've really pwned all ever the ballpark I'm looking at). Anyone aware of some other good stuff like this? Does this show how little I know about music?

The Field- From Here We Go To Sublime

I don't know what it is about this album, but I find it absolutely mesmerizing.

I can put it on at any point on any given day and enjoy it 100%.

David Bowie makes my head hurt. I've been trying to sink my teeth into Bowie since I was like eleven, but his catalog is so dauntingly confusing to me that I've never really sat down and listened. That track mk put on his mix absolutely blew my balls away, so I downloaded a few albums, filling out my unlisted-to collecting to Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, Young Americans, Low, "Heroes," Lodger (although it's still waiting for seeders, somehow), and Scary Monsters.

Can someone tell me what's good, if there are others I need first, and basically what to listen to, when, and why?

If you're confused where to start, I'd go with Ziggy. It's wild, weird, and fantastic. Bowie's a bit all over the place, he does all kinds of crazy things with his albums, and most of the ones you've listed are great.

heh, isn't that song ridiculous? all the albums you listed are great imo. i would add station to station to your list. but yeah, it certainly takes some getting used to how all over the place his catalog is. i generally advise people to go a little bit at a time with bowie. if you try to absorb it all really quickly your ears probably won't get attached to much.

i've been binging hard on steely dan this week. aja is sooooooooo good.

Okay so I just heard Juliette and the Licks this morning on my way to work. I only heard one song, but it was pretty kick ass. They were doing an interview with her and she is pretty cool. It is Juliette Lewis who is a great actress in her own right, but I just remember her as the sex loving nympho in Old School, anyway apparently she has a great voice as well.

Anyone else hear her yet?

I've been trying new stuff out recently. somebody in here mentioned broken social scene recently, and I've got a few of their songs, and just got one of their albums. can't remember which one right now, but its the one somebody recommended I believe. I'm really digging them. also, that RJD2 jive is really the tits man. that is some of the best beats in the whole wide world.

also, has everybody been listening to the bonus radiohead stuff? I haven't got it yet and have refused to listen to it until the actual cd gets here, but I thought most of you downloaded it already. I ask because nobody's been discussing it. is it horrible or something? are they all just covers of show tunes?

BSS is teh nuts, their self titled work is my favorite so far.

And the 2nd Radiohead disk is better than the first IMO.

Broken Social Scene is good, check out You Forgot It In People and Broken Social Scene.

I definitely dig on some RJD2 now and then. Deadringer is the nuts and The Horror EP and Since We Last Spoke are also worth listening to.

I took someone's advise (mk?) and picked up the first five Elvis Costello records. I listened to Armed Forces, for alphabetic reasons (i.e. I hit play over the name on my iPod, and just let it run), and am in shock over how much I love it. I don't know what it is about his voice and vocal choices that I love so much, but I loved every track. If the rest are near as good, I'm a disturbingly huge fan.

I'll probably be banned from this thread forever for saying this, but I really like garth brooks' new song 'more than a memory'

I made you peeps a tape. I'll prolly post a link late in the afternoon. It's of no particular agenda, but I'll note that it includes Cam'Ron's "Ha Ma." I disclose this so I can respond in advance: Fuck you; you can ignore all the sweet Radio Rap you want, when you're making me a mixtape. In the mean time, shut up and enjoy your fucking pop music, fags. You're lucky I didn't include Twista's "Overnight Celebrity."

I'm listening back through all the Zeppelin records, for some reason. IV was my favorite as a kid, but I think even after a year and a half without listening to it or Classic Rock radio, I'm still played out on it. Conversely, I'm not sure if I didn't really Physical Graffiti before, but I barely remember most of these songs, and I really think it's one of the best.

Thoughts, my dear Wang?

6+ hour drive home from school. after a couple mixes, listened to ok computer twice, strawberry jam twice, and in rainbows twice.

conclusions:
ok computer is still my favorite album ever.

strawberry jam is really damn good.

in rainbows, apart from track 8, is maybe the best and most consistent album they have put out since ok computer. (im not as high on kid a as others, especially as an album, where i think optimistic, treefingers and inlimbo are a bit of a downswing from the rest of the album)

on second thought, on typing it, i cant put in rainbows above an album with idioteque, motion picture soundtrack, everything is in its right place, and how to disappear completely.

i think only 15 step, nude, reckoner, and videotape are close to the level of the songs just listed.

in rainbows is still darn good though, better than amnesiac and HTTT as a whole.

For some reason I'm listening to Grinderman's Grinderman, and putting together my year-end mixtape.

I've decided there is going to be no rap on the CD. I can never properly find a way to mix rap/non-rap music on one disc, so I'm just going to boot rap from the record completely. I may have one of you make a companion piece, entitled "Wang's Companion: Black People's Music" or something.

I'm going to have mine ready for release around the beginning of the New Year. It should be pretty listener friendly, with mostly singles/accessible tracks. I'm 99% sure "No Pussy Blues" is going to be on there

Been listening to the new Wu-Tang a little lately. It has its highs, but it certainly has its lows. Honestly, my least favorite part of the album is the RZA's overall production of it.

Raekwon is sick on this album though, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2 sometime soon, pleeeeease.

wait what? you crazy. If you're saying you think it doesn't flow well with the rest of the tracks that's one thing. If you're saying you don't like the track that's another. Actually, wait. Neither is acceptable.

You're lucky you're wearing those super cool pilot sunglasses.
