Next: Elvis Costello. I'm downloading Get Happy, This Year's Model, and Blood and Chocolate. Is that a reasonable selection? Anything to add? (Those albums were selected based on number of seeds.)
Everything he did up to and including
Imperial Bedroom (my favorite) is totally essential imo. Again imho, his first 5 years as a major recording artist rivals any 5 year period by any other artist/band in history including, you know, Dylan and the Beatles and stuff.
A big part of the reason I haven't yet submitted my Essential 80s List for Persons Who Believe They Are Hip is because I can't decide which Costello tune to include.

I've been mostly ignoring the exploration of '00s indie rock and the like, so while waiting for some '80s advise, I'm playing The Walkman. I only heard of them last night (Pitchfork lists) (though they seem to've been pretty popular), but I get the impression they're considered overrated by a lot of hipsters. I'm a few tracks into Bows + Arrows, and find it pretty cool.
Another band I'm preparing to spin: The Books.
Thoughts on either?

Thanks, I'll check them all out (thank God I don't mind steeling, because -- having just done the math -- I have about $16,000-worth of music in iTunes. Can that be right?).

I did, however, decide that when Thom sings:
"This is one for the good days
and i have it all here
In red, blue, green
Red, blue, green"
that he is referencing the colors of component cables. Videotape. Recording equipment. Red, blue and green component cables.
There's a reason I don't smoke very often.
but those cables are red, yellow, and white.
oh, and I figure this is the proper place to ask. I've been seeing posts for the past 2 years about this "animal collective" mumbo jumbo, and I've finally decided that I should probably check them out. however, after searching (and this thread only mind you), I've found approximately 437 posts mentioning what I'm assuming is every single song they've ever written. so where would be a good place to start to see if I'd like them or not? just like maybe 5 songs.
is there some sort of bear with a keen logistical sense on this board that may know the answer to this? I sure hope so.

By anything but a consensus, their most approachable songs are the first two songs off
Feels, "Did You See the Words," and "Grass." Feels is easily my favorite of their records, and though I'm not as gizzed up on it as Wang is, it's a really cool album, at worst.

Animal Collective is awesome, I would just download everything you see, but I can pick a couple songs for you I guess.
Leaf House, Winters Love, We Tigers, Peacebone, and Fireworks are probably my 5 favorite songs if I had to choose.

I am skilled in the art of war and military tactics and music reccomendation.
Animal Collective are an odd band, as they generally take a few listens to decide whether or not you hate them. If I were going to put together a handful of songs, it'd probably look something like:
"Did You See the Words" - Feels
"For Reverend Green" - Strawberry Jam
"Peacebone" - Strawberry Jam
"Winter's Love" - Sung Tongs
"Who Could Win a Rabbit" - Sung Tongs
"Leaf House" - Sung Tongs
That's six songs, and it's as sparse a list as you're going to get. "Did You See the Words" feels to me like their most accessible song. I have a feeling if you listen to some of their stuff a few times, Shake, you'll come to like them. They're weird, and you are also weird.

the yellow, red and white cables you're referring to carry a composite video signal (yellow) and stereo audio (red and white). a component video signal divides some of the color information into separate paths so as to minimize interference. RGB analog component video is probably what Thom is referencing.

As a student, how? Like I said, I have $15,000-worth, all stolen. I would need to spend at least $50-80 a week, which I could afford, because I'm bizarrely financially secure, somehow, but most hip people couldn't, I would guess. I don't know how 99% of music fans put together the scratch for any kind of respectable collection, especially not knowing what they're paying for. as far as Animal Collective, I listened to Feels on the way down here. I'm sure this comparison has been made before, but they remind me a lot of Modest Mouse. Just with a lot more acid. I liked it, especially the first song (can't remember what its called), but found that I kept waiting for the rest of the cd to "get going", if that makes any sense. I'm gonna check out the other ones icebearwang and others have recommended. I can see myself getting into them.
also, I haven't checked back in the thread, did yorke ever upload that 80's mix he listed the songs for? that looked good.

Yeah, as overhyped as that record was, it kinda' dropped without much attention to how cool it actually was. It was knocked for sounding a lot like NIN, of which I'm not traditionally a fan, and I don't think the comparison is off, but I think the sound works. He doesn't have the vocabulary of my boyfriend Busdriver or the like, but in some ways he's smarter; that "Niggy/Nothing" exchange being a good example of his sweetness. Really? Man, I must've gotten hip without realizing it.
There's really not that much Ryan Adams out their that I like. His first solo record, Heartbreaker, is probably his best, but weirdly my favorite album is what I used to think was some kind of EP, but turned out to be a 5-track bonus disc from Gold. Gold is alright, but the bonus tracks alone back it a worth-while download/purchase.
I'm glad you liked it; I figured the most indie thing I could do was stick a country song or two on there.

Well, Yorke, your mixtape has officially had a tangible impact on my life.
While listening to my iPod on shuffle, The Lung popped up, and I realized how much I loved Dinosaur Jr. So I listened to the song a few times, etc., etc. Then a girl from my Econ class walked into the computer lab, and for some reason I have a huge thing for this mousy chick. In order to buck myself up to start a conversation with her, I decided I would listen to The Lung three times, and then go speak with her.
Starting... now.
Wish me luck.
